I've tried searching, but have yet to find a concise answer to this...
We are travelling by train from Vienna to Prague on Sunday, May 20th. How much can I expect to pay for 2 people (25/26), and where can I confirm a schedule? Also, is it necessary to reserve this in advance, or am I pretty certain to get tickets on the same day, or day before?

www.sbb.ch then choose the english lanuguage option at the top. Put in your originating city and destination city with your dates of travel.

If you're taking the train into and out of Prague, the Prague Pass will probably be your best buy. We used it last June for Vienna-Prague-Munich.
Try Euraide.com for help with it (http://www.euraide.com/). They understand how to work the pass, as you have to also purchase fare from the Czech border to and from your final destinations, so it's a bit complicated-- but Euraide knows how to do it.
They charge face value, plus a flat fee of $45 for an entire purchase, which includes postage to your home. They also have an 800 number so you can talk to a live body.
We were very happy with their service, and I liked having the tickets in-hand before we left the USA. If you don't have time for that, maybe they can suggest a will-call or deliver to your hotel, etc.

Thanks Maureen for the reply. We only need tickets for one leg of our trip, since we'll be flying from Prague to Rome, so I don't think that the Prague Pass is for us.

By the way, Visas are no longer required for Chech republic, correct?

That's right-- we only needed our passports. Have fun in Prague! It's beautiful. You still might want to ask Euraide.com for help with your tickets.

Visas are not required for American passport holders, but they are for our Canadian friends.

Round trip, Vienna to Prague, first class, cost me 132 Euros at the train station in Vienna. I imagine it's less for second class. You do not have to reserve seats in advance, nor do you have to have your ticket validated at the station - there is an onboard inspector who stamps your ticket.

We bought tickets with seat reservations the day before from the travel agent in the Neuer Markt. I don't know whether that increases the price at all, but it saves having to make a special trip to the station, and if you have tickets in advance you don't have to get to the station so early on the day you're travelling.

Thanks Gavin - is this new? I had some Canadian friends that were travelling to Prague, and they said that they needed to get visas.

As a Canadian travelling to Prague, no visa is required, but your passport must be valid 90 days beyond your expected stay...
