Vienna Music - Confused
Greetings!
I am looking forward to visiting Vienna on May 6-10. My third trip. From what I can tell surfing the web, not much in the main music venues are available. Most appear to be sold out or limited tickets. Most of the venues seem to be the more tourist oriented music (OK - I am a tourist, but I'm interested in more serious music). Do you have to order through local ticket agents when you get there? I did see the Sound of Music at the Volksopera. Any views on the venue or program? I could not find any ballet, I assume it must be off-season? The philharmonic seemed to only have handicapped seating left. I also saw some some former postings regarding cathedral/church concerts. The links to their websites had no calendars. Can you get tickets/seats once you get there?
Thanks for any help you can give!

Some choices
Volksoper
www.volksoper.at
May 7 Magic Flute/Zauberflotte
May 10 La Traviata
the Volksoper is the 2nd opera house of Vienna- mostly operetta and lighter fare- high quality and a fair price - top ticket is 80 euro.
Ballett company of Volksoper and State Opera have been combined in an economy measure - so good quality - many gusset soloists- by chance none on during your stay.
Musikverein
www.musikverein.at
Philharmonic - this is late to get tickets
your hotel concierge can find tickets for you but with a good premium-
alternative is Rudolph Buchbinder - world known pianist and a Vienna favorite
May 9 tickets available.
Andre Rieu May 8 at the Stadthalle- he is back on tour after a long illness.
www.stadthalle.com
Church concerts - most days at St. Peters - city center just off Graben--. 3 PM free
www.peterskirche.at
Sundays - Mass at the Augustiner Church in Hofburg - always fine music- often by State Opera and Volksoper soloists and fine musicians
10 :15 I think.

If you are interested in music in Vienna you might also put these two museums on your list:
http://www.khm.at/en/collections/col...l-instruments/ (This webpage has a email address if you would like more information, sometime such experts are a wealth of related information in their cities so they might know about other music venues or ticket aggregators.)
http://www.hausdermusik.at/en/events/31.htm (This webpage is the "events" page for this museum which includes "live on stage" and "artist talks" which might be of interest to you. They also have "[email protected]" email address on their "contac" page if you wanted to write.)

May isn't off season for ballet, but it's just that no ballet company usually performs continuously for weeks or months at a time in one city, they usually perform a week or two in a season in a particular locale (Fall, Spring, etc), so it depends when a particular company may schedule their Spring season. In fact, the Vienna State Opera Ballet does perform in May in Vienna, but not till the end of the month, unfortunately.
