Three nights near Bronschhofen, Switzerland

Hi,

I am so impressed with all the great information available on this site. I hope someone can help me on our trip to Switzerland next month.

My husband has a business trip to Bronschhofen in late September. We are coming from Milan by train to Zurich on Tuesday. His meeting is on Wednesday for a few hours and we fly out of Zurich on Friday afternoon. We are somewhat celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary so we were hoping we could stay somewhere nice that would be close enough for him to drive to his meeting in Bronschhofen on Wednesday and allow us to enjoy the area the other days. I would still, however, be vacationing on Wednesday...

I read some reviews about Stein am Rhein. I'm not sure if it's close enough for my husband to travel to his meeting, but it seems to be the closest spot I read about. However, Stein am Rhein seemed to be a place for a stop over or short trip. Would 3 nights there be too much?

Another option is that we stay in Zurich on Tuesday night, he goes to his meeting, and then we travel by train somewhere else late Wednesday. I could take a day trip from Zurich on Wed.

I appreciate any suggestions for where we should go. We have not been to Switzerland before, but have heard such wonderful things about the country.

Thank you!

Hello, Cindy.

I'm topping this in hopes that schuler or other on-the-ground folks might see your thread.

I notice that it takes a couple of hours to reach Bronschhofen by train from SAR, but that's probably because of the changes. If I can find my map, I'll take a look. What I can say is that Stein amd Rhein is an absolutely lovely little place, and three nights would be excellent. You can visit Schaffhausen from there if you run out of peace and quiet.

Switzerland = Alps

This region of Switzerland is relatively flat. Therefore I suggest that you head towards Luzern and the Vierwaldstätter See for some of the best scenery that country has to offer.

It's an area not too far from Zurich...

Dear Cindy,

I had to look up Bronschhofen. It's basically a suburb of Wil, a larger town with a train station.

Appenzell: 1 hour train ride from Wil. Change trains in Gossau or St. Gallen. A very magical, quaint town.

St. Gallen: 30 min. direct train ride from Wil. A city with a nice monastary and an amazing library of old books.

Urnasch: 30 min by train (change in Gossau)
Quaint small town (smaller than Appenzell) with a nice folk museum.

Säntis: 1 hr 40 min. journey from Wil to top of the mountain. Need to take train, bus and cable car.
Beautiful scenery and area.

Stein am Rhein: 1 hr 12 min. train ride. Change trains in Frauenfeld or Winterthur. Another amazing small town, a favourite of many fodorites.

Schaffhausen: 1 hr by train. Change in Winterthur. Known for the Rhein waterfall and the city itself.

If you are a big city person, stay in Zürich.

If you enjoy the countryside, go to Bronschhofen. I'm willing to bet the company will organise some nice dinners for their guests in a wonderful restaurant nearby.

To see where Bronschhofen is, use:
search.ch and click on "karte". Type in "Bronschhofen" and you'll see exactly where you are at.

For train schedules, use sbb.ch and press in "en" for English on top of the screen.

By using the map and the train schedules, you'll be able to get a feel of the area and Switzerland.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Hi J! Nice to hear from you.

Hi, schuler. (Back to school, so not much fodors time). I was hoping this one would catch your eye. There's nothing like an unfamiliar Swiss town when it comes to distracting me from real-world tasks. And as an extra bonus, there's your mention of search.ch! I had forgotten about that search engine. I did find Bronschhofen on my Switzerland Hallweg, which is just about falling apart from vicarious travel.

Have fun planning, Cindy.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'm still not sure if I will spend the day out in the country with my husband, but we will head to Lucerne for two nights to enjoy the beautiful lake and mountains. Thank you!
