The AC end of October: how many days?
Never been to the AC, but have been to Rome recently.
our plans are to stay in Positano for several days and visit Capri (ferry from Sorrento ),
see Positano, Ravello, Amalfi
stop for 3-4 hours at Pompeii on way back to Rome
Since weather is unpredictable, unsure how many days to stay overnight: 4 or 5?
we enjoy slow travel mode of exploring areas, just unsure abt off-season (if seas rough, we'd skip Capri, even from Sorrento ; we know boats don't run fr Positano then)
we do want 3 full days to explore, just unsure about if we need a 4th: thought about possibly just adding 1 more day to our re-visit of Rome (2008): have 2 1/2 full days currently.
Would love anyone who did stay end of October's advice, since it's different experience
than other months.

I can't tell how many days you're currently contemplating in the AC/Sorrento/Pompei area.
Do you have no interest in the archeology museum in Naples? FYI, all of the artifacts/treasures found in Pompeii were moved to the museum. Pompeii is still amazing/fascinating, and, if this sort of thing interests you, you may find 3-4 hours is not enough.
If it were my trip, I'd settle for 4 days, but I'd want 5 days. We've been there in late October. We had great weather, but others at that time have not been so lucky.

would you suggest an entire day to visit Amalfi as well as Ravello? had planned to visit both in same day?
Did you visit Capri at that time of year (Oct 28-Nov 2)?
hoping for no rain, but who knows...

We much prefer Capri to the Amalfi Coast but I would play it by ear. If the weather isn't absolutely beautiful, a day trip to Capri won't be all that pleasant. I'm not sure when the ferries reduce their schedules or stop running regularly but it may be Nov. 1. Make sure you check before you make your plans.

When we were there, the ferry service was reduced after the second weekend of October, and mamcalice may be correct about some service ending by November 1st. Another regular Fodors poster (Brit_in_Ischia, or something like that) has reported some previously offered ferry service was not initiated this summer due to budget cuts.
If you've made hotel reservations in Positano, I'd ask the hotel to give you information/guidance about ferry service during the dates of your stay.

Several years ago, I stayed on Capri from October 22-29. As you indicate, the weather is reportedly unpredictable at that time of year, but for us it was sunny and gorgeous. (By contrast, I was in Capri again several weeks ago, during the first week of June, and it rained 2 of our 7 days there, once quite intensely. Go figure).
In terms of Capri, I recall that a number of hotels closed for the season on September 30; another tranche closed for the season on October 15; and ours was among the handful of (luxury) hotels that closed on October 31. There were certainly plenty of restaurants and stores still open during our week there, but there were certainly others that had closed for the season. The beach clubs were closed -- though that meant you could walk down and sit on their ledges for free!
Anyway, we loved being there at that time of the year; however, my impression was that there may be a sharp difference between October 31 and November 1 in terms of services and ferry frequency. This is just an impression, I have no hard facts to back it up. But based on my experience, I'd aim to have the Capri portion and other "resort" portions of your visit earlier in your week, save Pompeii and Naples to the end. Will be curious as to what Peter from Ishchia has to say. Good luck!

Perhaps we'd do well not to confuse different issues?
Miracles aside, the heavily-subsidised but seasonal network of tourist hydrofoils, the Metro del Mare (whose last lines closed on 26th September in 2009 and 8th October in 2010), is unlikely to operate in 2011... however, for this visitor, they were probably never going to have been an option - the latest I've seen in recent years was Oct 15th, back in 2006.
The Alicost line usually runs on a while - in 2010 their frequently-changing schedules looked like this...

As they react to changes in conditions and demand, no promises from me as to what will happen this autumn - so check directly, or with their website, nearer the time:

Worth noting perhaps that in 2010 they shut the Salerno/AC/Capri route just after the All Saints' weekend - a big deal for Italians and the last event of the holidaying season, and what actually marks its end in many places, rather than strictly October 31st....
Similarly, the Bay's largest hydrofoil operators - Alilauro - changed theirs w.e.f. 4th November, after most of those visiting for that break would have gone home!
In 2011, the Sunday falls on October 30th, and the public holiday is actually on Tuesday November 1st - creating one of this year's very few pontes... extended weekend breaks - and my reckless guess is that the cut won't come until a day or two after that?
Depending on where you choose to stay, other services to look out for are:
