If I fly into Nice from the United States hiw do I get to the tgv station so I can get to Avignon?
Would it be easier to fly into Paris and take the TGV from the airport to Avignon?

Take bus 99 to Nice Ville station.

If you have a direct/non-stop flight from your local airport in the US to Nice, take a taxi from the Nice airport to the Nice Ville station to catch the TGV. If you can't fly direct & have to go to CDG first - catch the 3 1/4 hr TGV from CDG to the Avignon TGV station. Marseille instead of Nice would work too. IMO, you need a car to get the best out of Provence - so rent a car in Nice or Marseille and drive to Avignon if the TGV time schedule does not work out. The TGV from Nice to Avignon takes a long time.

Avignon is about half way, timewise, between CDG and Nice. Some trains form Nice travel in less than 3 hrs, while other taking longer than the train from CDG.

I would look at overall picture, not just the ground portion. Look at your transatlantic flight arrangement, plus TGV trip length, whether you plan to advance purchase TGV ticket with some risk of missing the train but at better price, and logistics in getting there.

The TGV station at CDG is just below and between terminal 2E Hall K and 2C, while Nice TGV requires getting to the downtown train station. Also, if I have to buy tickets, I like CDG better. I found Nice ticket area always crowded.

Use http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ to look at schedules and prices if the trip is not too far in future. They do not publish one year worth of schedule. If too far, just use the same day of the week next month. The station names are Nice-Ville, Avignon-TGV and CDG.
