Suggested itinerary for Prague and Vienna

We are arriving Vienna on Apr.21, 2012 and departing from Prague on April 29.
I would like to get an advice/suggested itinerary for both of the cities. Should we stay 4 nights in each city or 5 nights in Vienna and 3 in Prague? We are taking a traing from Vienna to Prague.
Staying at Julian Hotel in Prague and Lindner Am Belvedere in Vienna.

For me, I would choose the 5 nights in Vienna and 3 in Prague, because there are more museums and cultural things to do in Vienna.

If you take the train, suggest you take one of the nonstop trains that leave from Wien Meidling Station. Right now, until 2015, there's a lot of construction at the various railroad stations in Vienna. Meidling can be a bit confusing, so suggest you give yourselves at least 1/2 hour to get from the metro stop, get oriented and onto the correct tracks at Meidling.

You take the U6 metro to Philadelphiabrucke stop, then make your way to the correct train tracks at Meidling RR Station.

Do not recommend the Sudbahnhof because that is planned to be the Central Station and is a real mess in terms of construction right now. At the moment, the main train station is the Westbahnhof.

Here's the Austrian train website:

http://www.oebb.at/en/

It can get confusing, because there are a number of major train stations in Vienna. Just remember MEIDLING for the Vienna to Prague trains.

How about 4 nights Vienna, 1 night Cesky Krumlov, and 3 nights Prague (although I like Prague more so then Vienna so for myself I'd switch the number of nights but you may have the jet lag thing so an additional night in Vienna would help.)

C. Krumlov is a must see!

We just did a similiar trip with 3 days Vienna, 1.5 days Cesky Krumlov and 3 nights Prague. I'm so glad we included CK, but it is cumbersome to get there via public transit, as there are no direct connections with either Vienna or Prague.

There are a couple of companies that provide mini-van service between Vienna and CK... and CK and Prague.

Lobo Shuttle is one of them.

There have been a number of posts on this site about them.

Also, someone on this site rented a driver and said the cost wasn't too bad.

We hired shuttle services and it was very convenient - I listed the ones we used in my recent trip report. While the shuttle service is cheaper than renting a car, it isn't cheaper than taking the train/bus - but it's twice as fast.

If you want to stop off in Cesky Krumlov, here's Passportchop's useful blog on the subject of transportation from Vienna to CK:

I'd rethink the hotel location in Prague - you're not near Old Town, Josefov, Mala Strana, the Charles Bridge or even in the Castle district. You're across the river from New Town, which has Wencelas Square and some museums, but is not the main part of Prague from a tourist's perspective. I'm a fan of The Bishop's House, where I stayed, because it is mere steps from the Charles Bridge and a couple of blocks from central Mala Strana; there are hotels near there that are good value too.

Prague may not have the array of museums that Vienna has, but it has the Castle, the Charles Bridge, cathedrals, architecture, history both medieval and communist, and is within day-trip reach of both Karlstejn Castle and Terezin. Consider more time in Prague.
