Hi all!

I am looking at booking a holiday for next Summer starting in Stockholm then to Oslo, then Oslo to Copenhagen. Would this be the correct order, or would you suggest a different route?

I am thinking of flights between the three cities as they seem relatively cheap and the quickest way to get there. Is this correct, or would you suggest a different form of transport?

I am currently thinking of 4 nights in Stockholm, 3 nights in Oslo and 4 nights in Copenhagen. Is this enough time to see the sights in the three cities and their surrounding areas? Please could you suggest whether I need to increase/decrease the number of nights in each place.

I will be travelling with my partner, I am 27 and he is 32. We have little experience of holidays in Europe, but last year we visited Iceland and really enjoyed it. The best holiday we've had so far. It was a mixture of visiting sights such as the places on the Golden Circle and Reykjavik, and then taking part in activities such as dog sledding and horse riding. We enjoy eating out and trying different foods, however we are not big drinkers. Could you recommend places to see/activities to take part in? Are there any others places that we could visit on this trip? Is it possible to visit the fjords in Norway? Danish Riviera in Denmark?

Any advice and help you could give would be greatly appreciated. If there is anything else you need to know please let me know!

Thanks for your help. I've had a read through your reports and looked at your pics. It seems there are lots of places to see, but are there any other things to do in addition to this? I enjoy sightseeing but would also like to do some different things too.

We visited. Stockholm and Copenhagen this September and really loved both cities. We rented bikes in both cities and I strongly recommend it-the cities are very bike friendly and you get a great overview of the cities. In Stocklholm the Soldermalm district is young and fun. Google both cities for good articles about up and coming neighborhoods for your age group. We also took the train from Stocklholm to Copenhagen, it was a nice ride and takes you city center to city center. Lots easier than getting out to airports.

Neighborhood we stayed in Copenhagen was Vesterbro. Don't miss Christiania -an enclave in the middle of the city that is really unique.

Hello,

You've plenty of time for each city. You can stop off in Malmo in southern Sweden on your way to Copenhagen for the afternoon. In Copenhagen check out Christiania. In Oslo you should go to the old Olympic ski jump above the town (via subway!) and also Frogner Park to see the stone sculptures. You can then see the fjords via the Norway in a Nutshell tour and at the end have a look round Bergen. Apologies if you are already aware of any of this!

it really depends on your interests, but if you want to make at least one day trip from each city, then you might want to consider adding one more day in Stockholm and one more to Copenhagen.

For activities, you might check out The Lonely Planet guide books -- they usually cover active options quite well. The Rough Guide often covers activities, too.

ProEU-any info. you can give is great. I don't have any friends or family that have been so the only stuff I know about is what I've found browsing on the internet so getting advice from people who have been is greatly appreciated. I'm already adding your ideas into my plans!

Macdogmom-thanks for your advice. The bikes sound like a great idea! Did you find the train ok with your luggage? We will have small suitcases with us. How long did the train take and did you pre book tickets? Did you take a train through the night or day? I was.planning to stay in the centre of Copenhagen, are these neighbourhoods within easy reach of the city centre?

I haven't been to Oslo yet, so I really can't speak to whether I would skip it to make more time for Stockholm and Copenhagen. More to the point, that wouldn't answer the question of what makes most sense FOR YOU. Ultimately, it really depends on YOUR interests. So again, I'll encourage you to check out some guidebooks to find you which things you most want to do. For as much money as you will spend on this trip, the cost of a guidebook or two is two is nugatory. And you can also look over the ones in your local library. Guidebooks like the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide will also give you excellent information about transportation. Hope that helps!

I think Stockholm to Copenhagen was about 4-6 hours. The train station was very easy to get to, we took the subway from our hotel (Story Hotel which I highly recommend). We bought the tickets at the station. Here is a link with info on high speed trains in Sweden and Denmark. Much better way to see the countryside than a plane!

Unless you plan another Scandanvian trip, I would not leave out Oslo. The previously mentioned Frogner Park and other parks at the bayside are worth the visit. AND Norway in a Nutshell will get you out to the fjords and takes about a day and a half. I've been to all three and I would not chose either Stockholm or Copenhagen over a visit to Oslo. I trained everywhere but I believe that many take a ferry overenight from Copenhagen to Oslo. Then you can ferry back or train over to Stockholm. Lots of ways to arranage your 'triangle'.

Not talked about but I learned while there, I take a public bus to Draagor (a port village past the airport that is very scenic). In the summer you can get freshly smoked fish and have a nice meal before returning to Copenhagen (and get an ice cream while there).
