Stockholm Hotel-Best area for sightseeing, cafes and general ambience?

We are a couple travelling with our 14 year old grandson in late July. We'll be there 3 nights. In Stockholm, we want to see City Hall, the Palace, Vasa Warship, Skansen, Milles Sculpture Garden & maybe-? - the National Museum (depends on our grandson). For relaxing, we'd like to be around cafes and possibly have a water view in a hotel, but that's not a must if it's too expensive. We aren't interested in nightlife & clubs. Is the city center the better place for a quick walk into town?

What is the best area for us? I read that Gamla Stan is nice, but then the City Center also sounds great. We love relaxing at cafes especially if they're near the water but won't do too much of that as a 14 year old probably won't find that very enjoyable. Is A/C necessary in late July or will leaving the windows open be fine? Anyone have a hotel suggestion that is a good fit for us?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I'm going to Stockholm in June. You could email me the end of June and I could offer you some suggestions if you like. John

We found Hotel Gamla Stan in the Old Quarter to be perfect. Immaculate, great location, good breakfast, friendly staff and within walking distance of all that you have listed.

Gamla Stan is very nice and makes a good hub, however it is quite easy to get around S by walking and public transportation. We have a very good subway and bus system.

During the summer there are plenty of outdoor cafes/restaurants to chose from and many on the water, ex. FLYTT just at Slussen. In Stortorget on Gamla Stan Choklad is also nice.

Hotel Reisen on Gamla Stan is very nice as well as the nearby Hilton Slussen if you prefer to spend a bit more. July is a very busy so you might like to look into hotel reservations soon.

For your grandson you might want to look into Historiska Museum for their Viking exhibit. During the summer they often hands-on activities for kids in the courtyard with a Viking theme.

Skansen has reindeer in the zoo area which he might also like to see. And the Vasa, well, that is just a must do activity! Hope you have a great time!

we will be staying at the first reisen after doing some research on trip advisor and then getting the thumbs up from people here
we chose it because of its location
i always wanted to stay in gamla stan but somewhere in the middle of our plans we started to look further out of town ( to see if we could get something reasonable)
but considering we are only in stockholm three nights i really wanted to be central- somewhere i could walk out at evening and not have to catch cabs to a see something

i think if youre staying for a short time - go to gamla stan

I stayed at the Hotel First Reisen in December. It is quite nice, on Gamla Stan and on the water. I would stay there again. I would also stay on Gamla Stan as my first preference in Stockholm.

Your hotel choice may be affected by whether you can find a "family room" that can accommodate the 3 of you. Many hotel rooms in Sweden come with 2 twin beds --period -- and can be small by US standards. Stockholm hotels can get quite expensive, but no matter where you are in the City you should be not too far from the water.
My solution with our teenage son last Summer was, well, less than going totally Swedish -- the Stockholm Sheraton, which was running an internet book-ahead special, 3 nights for price of two. They have rooms with 2 queen beds, thus eliminating the need at other hotels to book 2 rooms. The Sheraton is a short walk across a bridge to Gamla Stan in one direction and City Hall in another. Many bus lines stop on the square just in front and Central Station and the subway are 2 blocks away. Be aware, however, the Sheraton does not include breakfast in its rates, contrary to most hotels in Sweden. Another chain hotel to check out is Scandic -- they had internet book ahead specials last year also, and family rooms at some locations.

Oh, one other thing. Here in Stockholm we are proud to have the 1st jumbo jet that has opened as a hostel adjacent to the airport. Depending on the time of your flight out, it could be extra fun for you and your grandson to stay there. It is extemely clean, breakfast is included. I stayed there a month ago and can recommend it. The room I was in had a queen size (for 2 persons) on the floor level and a bunk for 1. A real novelty!
