StCirq, question about Dordogne.

With just 3 weeks until our visit to France, I was just going through my files (and files and files) of notes for our upcoming trip and found an interesting reply you had posted to Uhoh busted's trip report. You mentioned a prehistoric site that was accessible by the "secret door". You requested an email address and you would share your secret. My email address is [email protected], would you be so kind to share?

We are spending 5 greatly anticipated days in the Dordogne, staying in a manoir in St Nathalene. I have most of my "must do" list together of all of the towns and sites that are frequently mentioned here, but was wondering if there are any lesser known places or things to do that you have found in your explorations. I was thinking of hopping in the car one day and just driving, and stopping whenever a town or other things caught our attention. Good idea, or possibly a waste of a day without an agenda? Thanks.

If you're staying in Ste-Nathalène, then one of the first things you must do is visit the walnut mill and buy some walnut oil.

Just driving around aimlessly is THE thing to do in the Dordogne! It's just so amazing that village after village and landscape after landscape can be so unrelentlessly picturesque...as you will see.

I will e-mail you the secret door information - have fun with it!

Oh, and if you're interested, I know of a prehistoric grotte for sale

As fr as lesser known things to explore, hmmmm...there's a Buddist community in Paunac, you can go to Allas-les-Mines and go on a horseback ride through some very out-of-the-way medieval villages, the artists' studios in and around Meyrals are worth a visit, you can see the gavage at the goose farm in Tursac, you can have dinner at a goose farm called La Faisanderie in Audrix where every course will be goose...I'll see what else I can think of....

I reeeally wish I could buy that Grotto.
I can see myself, wandering the roads of the Dordogne, the locals will call me that crazy Americain! and will shake their heads ~
Then I will knock on poor StCirqs door and beg for recipes ~ LOL~

StCirq, we'll be in Dordogne the last week of May, staying in LeBugue. You've given me some very helpful information on another board, but I didn't know to request the "secret door" secret! Would you be so kind to e-mail me as well at [email protected]. We're getting very excited about our stay in Dordogne followed by 3 days in St. Emilion and 4 in Paris!

Thanks again.

I'll add the grotte to my list, along with my home in the Tuscan hillside.

I have horses so if I can drag my husband to go for a ride with me, I just may do that! What better way to spend the afternoon?

Cigalechanta-Love chocolate covered anything, another thing for my list. Thanks also for the Orgon reply.

I am really looking forward to our upcoming sensory overload.

We will be staying in La Roque Gageac this June for two weeks and would love to explore the "secret" prehistoric site. My email address is [email protected]. Thanks for sharing this information. Can't wait to get to the Dordogne.

Hi StCirq,

I know this thread is old and at the risk of opening this can of worms again, could I trouble you for the directions to the secret door as well?

My email is [email protected].

Btw, thanks for all the great information you have provided in these threads.

Hi, kkkKelly.

Yes, I'll be happy to email you. It may well be that since I first started posting about the secret door, many people have found it (I kind of doubt it, though), but in any case you will be among a handful of folks who actually find this place.
