Spain in January/Packing suggestions.
My 22 year old son will be traveling to Casablanca, Fez and then onto Spain with his college as part of a historical tour.
They will be visiting mosques, cathedrals, museums and other points of interests. Cities in Spain include Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Toledo and Madrid. I would appreciate any packing suggestions that are appropriate for the venues, culture and weather. Thanks a lot.

My daughter and I traveled in Spain in Nov/Dec '05. Seville was the warmest spot and Salamanca and Granada were the coldest. I suggest the layered approach, with a pretty warm jacket, maybe a Gortex type that is water and wind resistant. Then have a fleece long sleeved top to go under it, along with some long sleeved lightweight tops, including a turtleneck or two. Power-dry or silk long underwear (top and bottom), some nylon pants, a pair of jeans, smartwool socks...I think it was colder than usual when we were there, so I get it would compare with January. The person who advised me leads groups of students on tours every February, and that's what she recommended. In terms of appropriateness for culture and venues, we didn't bring anything dressy, and never needed it.

You can always expect some rain, but generally the weather is fair in January in Sevilla and most of Andalucia. If you're use to hotter weather, then a windbreaker and sweater should do fine, and a raincoat may help. If you're from a colder part of the country you may find it rather warm except for Toledo and Madrid, where it can be a bit cooler in January.
