Sirimione or Brescia

Hi,

We're going to Italy in September. We are going to Venice for 3 nights and then will spend 5 nights on Lake Garda. We haven't booked anywhere yet for Lake Garda and are trying to decide between Brescia and Sirimione.

We are a couple in our 30's who like to relax and explore a little during the day and go to a nice restaurant in the evening. I figure we will take the ferry a little and visit other towns on the lake and maybe hire a car too.

Anyone any ideas on which is a better base and also any hotel recommendations?

Many thanks, Laura

I've just realised that I'm an idiot and Brescia isn't on the lake! But it has been recommended to me as a nice place to stay.

I can only tell where NOT to stay, even though it is No. 1 on trip advisor in Sirmione. Hotel Marconi. We were there in October (bad time to be in the lakes area but that is another story). I had many e-mails with them before arriving and was promised a certain room with a lake view. When we arrived, it appeared that "somehow" those rooms were taken and we were given a less preferential one. As much as I was disappointed and upset, what really got my goat was the fact that they were going to charge me for the more expensive lake view room. I spoke with the manager and he agreed to "give me a discount" on the room. I asked him "what discount?" this is what the room SHOULD have cost. No discount, no nothing. For this reason alone, I would never return here. I hope you have better luck in your searches.

We rather like the Hotel Desiree in Sirmione. You can see what it looks like including the view from it at http://photo360.it/hoteldesiree/
It is close to an olive grove and near the Roman remains
The only person who has made an entry in Tripthingy says
"food rather orientated towards Italian country style cooking".

To me that was rather a plus.
Most people who go there are Italians, many going for the hot springs,

Hi again,

I got my names mixed up - it's Pescheira, not Brescia - Anyone been there?
