Sintra, Portugal
Does anyone happen to know the Lawrence Hotel in Sintra? Is it a truly special place to go for lunch or is it more of a tourist trap?
If you had only 5 hours to spend in the area (port stop from cruise ship), would you simply explore Lisbon instead of doing the ship's excursion to Sintra and environs?
Thanks!

I don't know your hotel. However, I do LOVE Sintra; it is absolutely beautiful.
I am not one for excursions, and since you have only 5 hours, I think you should explore Lisboa on your own.
Since you are on a cruise, I think it would be such a waste of valuable time to take a long lunch break as you can eat on the ship. Just grab something quick and try to see as much as you can of fabulous Lisboa.
There are two main tourist draws in Lisboa--Belem and Alfama. I would choose one and explore that area.
In Belem, you could visit the Tower of Belem, Monument of the Discoverers, The Coach Museum, and the Jeronimos Monastery.
In Alfama, you could take a tram or walk up the hill (from Baixa) that leads to Castelo Sao Jorge, the Se, and the pretty houses and shops in the neighborhood.
In both places, you can find cafes for a quick bite.

Another vote for exploring Lisboa! Sinta is beautiful, but Lisbon offers so much more. Especially loved Alfama. Too bad your time is so limited - you'll want to return and really take time to explore. ENJOY

I certainly would see Lisbon over Sintra on your first trip there. However, if you do go to Sintra, there is a wonderful small place for lunch,Restaurante Tulhas, located down the side street next to the church. It was one of the best meals we had during our two weeks in Portugal and was filled with local families.

Thanks for the replies, everyone: obviously a consensus! What I didn't mention in my original post was that, in fact, we have visited Lisbon in the past-- and of course absolutely loved it. Were there for about 4 days-- but that was in the early 80's and haven't been back since. We're very excited that this cruise has Lisbon as one of its stops, but I've been trying to decide whether to enjoy the city again (I'm sure we would) or to take the Sintra excursion (it stops at that particular place for lunch, supposedly the 2nd oldest hotel in the world?) I may decide later, once aboard (in 2 weeks actually!), but I'm happy to have your input. Thanks again.
