Seeking London restaurant recommendation.
My husband and a I have tickets to the theatre - Mama Mia - on 19 April - a Thursday evening @ 7:30 - we are looking for a restaruant for a lite dinner before the show - not too expensive by British standards - which probably translates to USA stds as high! Between $50 - $75 for two - the theatre is over by Picadelli Circus area ? thank you -

hi, portdane -
i'd suggest heading over to china town to one of the many chinese reaturants. lots are open from about 5pm, if not all day. you can eat a lot for not much, if you get my drift.
also have a look in "time out" for recommendations for pre-theatre dinners in that area. there are bound to be some bargains.
regards, ann

If you like Japanese food (not necessry sushi), you might like to try Japan Centre on Piccadilly next to Piccadilly Circus, they open from noon till late evening, very good lunch or dinner set menu around 10 pounds. I have most of my meals there in London.

Uh, Via Capo d'Africa is a "dangerous" area? Sorry, but FRANCO doesn't know what he's talking about. It's really a ridiculous statement. I think if you look at the many positive and recent reviews of Lancelot, you'll see that everyone gives the LOCATION very favorable remarks.
I think in 26 years of going to Rome I ought to have a pretty good idea about what areas are "dangerous" and what areas aren't. And the truth is, I've roamed all over, by myself, late at night, (certainly this last September-around the Termini/Esquilino area at night). Never given it a second thought, never had a problem. While Rome is not the place it was several years ago, it's much more the big impersonal city than previously, there is NOTHING to be afraid of anywhere around the tourist centers of central Rome, and particularly the area around the Lancelot-sheesh!

Several years ago we ate at Sherlock Holmes Pub at 10-11 Northumberland St, just off the Strand near the theater district. If you like the ambiance of late ninnteenth century and Sherlock Holmes memorabelia, this is the place. Oh, and the food was good and the price reasonable.

Okay, this is what I wanted to post -your best bet is the GRILL ROOM at the Cafe Royal, located at 68 Regent Street, right there at Piccadilly. This is an exquisite decor, turn of the last century Victorian opulence dining room, with excellent 3 course dinners, reasonably priced, emphasis on seafood-it gets very good reviews, and I highly recommend it for a wonderful dining experience in beautiful surroundings.
The place is so elegant, you think there will be these astronomical dinner prices, but there isn't-that's the surprise. The bar, which is separate from the Grill Room, turns into a posh nightclubby area at night. Here's a review -and it gets 9/10-which is pretty darn difficult in central London-particularly around Piccadilly. It's a real find, but the locals know.

It has its own website: www.grill-room.com, but you can't see how beautiful the interior of the restaurant is.

Agree with Chinese restaurant suggestions--the service is usually quick. My other recommendations for early pre-theatre dinner would be Mela on Shaftsbury Ave, Busaba Eathai on Wardour St. (There are many good restaurants and bars on Wardour St.) Thought of Criterion near Picadilly Sq though they may not be open that early. Wagamama may appeal if you're desperately seeking an alternative to McDonald's...
