Scavi Office says my credit card number is "wrong"
Has anyone else have this happen?
I just found this message waiting for me in my inbox:
>>>The credit card number is wrong. No problem. I have confirmed your visit and you will pay the ticket in the office before the visit starts.<<<
Should I print this out to bring with me as my confirmation?
I checked and I <b>did</b> send them the <b>correct</b> cc number. This means either:
A) the Scavi Office made a mistake when punching in the number, or
B) "wrong" is a euphamism for "declined", which must mean my cc company refused the charge as being suspicious (I always tell them when I'm travelling abroad, although I've made international charges like buying exhibit or theater tickets online without problems before)
Should I just leave this be and do as Mr. Paolo Parrotta tells me in his email, or should I try to straighten things out and get the Scavi Office to try my card again?
It's one of those things that I know is not a big deal but still really, really bugs me just the same...

My guess is your CC blocked the transaction.
I also have used my CC multiple times to buy various overseas tickets. never had a problem until one occasion recently.
I had to buy multiple PREMS tickets for different trips. The first 2 transactions went through. The third didn't. However, I did get a call 10 minutes later from my CC company inquiring if I were trying to buy French railway tickets.

Just got off the phone with my cc company- they say there's no record of an attempted charge that was declined. Either I gave them the wrong number or the scavi office made a mistake while inputing the number. But I know for sure I sent the right number.
I also just did a really embarassing thing- I went on my account online and saw a charge for an airport limo dated Nov 5th. Of course I never took an airport limo on Nov 5th so I panicked and went through the fraud/"investigate the charges" thing on the phone when I realized it must be from when I got a taxi home from the airport like 3 weeks ago, after my trip to London. Who knew it would take them so long to process the payment? Jeez.
So everything's okay except I suspect the scavi office must have made an error when trying to process my payment for the scavi tour tickets.
So I'm back to where I started- should I ask them to try again, or leave it alone? Normally I would ask them to try again but rightly or wrongly I think of the Scavi office as being a bit like the soup nazi.

I guess I'll take Mr. Parrotta's word for it that it's "no problem" and make sure I have enough euro on me to pay in cash when we get there. I'll print out the email as my proof of confirmation (since he does say he confirmed the reservation) and arrive a bit early.
Thanks

If you don't have the reservation print-out the Vatican guards/employees won't let you go back to the Scavi office. You will have to show it to them and then to the Swiss Guard. They won't let you go back more than 10 minutes before your reservation.

We paid for our Scavi Tour (taken two weeks ago) with a credit card at the time of booking online (August).
They replied with my confirmation of payment, date and time of the tour and told me to bring a printout of the confirmation with me, which I did.
Does the e-mail from Scavi give a confirmed date and time? If so, I'd just take that printout with me to the Scavi office before the tour starts. I'd also take euros to pay in case they don't take cc at the office. When we checked in there was just a young guy behind a counter in a tiny room.
You will enjoy this tour--very moving.

I went through the whole booking process via email with no suprises (till now)-
~I sent my initial request with the information they require
~I immediately got an automatic reply telling me my email had been received
~a couple of days later I got the email telling me we were booked in for a tour on Tues Dec 31 at 3:30pm, and asking for my payment info
~I send them my payment info right away
~about a week later (ie yesterday) I got the exact email I cut and paste into my OP
My cc company assures me that everything is fine on my end, and there have been no attempted charges declined, so the Scavi office must have punched in the number incorrectly.
The email does contain the date and time of the tour, and the confirmation no. both in the subject line and further down in the email.
I'll print the email out and have it and enough euro on hand to pay cash. We aren't going to be visiting the vatican museums the same day, so there shouldn't be any problems about entry and backtracking.
So I guess I should leave well enough alone. I really, really want to email the scavi office back and ask them to try my card again because this little wrinkle just bugs me no end. But I know it's probably wiser to just follow the instructions in the email amd let it go.

If you start emailing back and forth with them with a lot of queries about CCs you risk the chance of them canceling your reservations by accident in the confusion.
Why does it matter if you pay via CC - and which one - or by cash.
You have a reservation - and that's all you need.
Just leave it alone and don;t make waves.
