Salzburg and train to Munich

Salzburg and train to Munich
Have a few days in Salzburg, wanting to do the bicycle tour of Sound of Music. How strenuous might this be? For an able bodied 82 year old? Probably a no, but my mom and I will be there and I would like to do it.
Too, we have a 12:40 flight out of Munich. Wondering if we need to spend the night there (coming in the day before) or would be safe taking the train from Salzburg. I have looked at schedules and think it looks doable, but better safe than sorry.
We will have already "seen" Munich, so thought another day in Salzburg would be nice.
Too, any recommendations in Salzburg? Restaurants (not fancy is fine)? Etc?

Yes orindarily but things like train strikes or whatever can always pop up -those are usually announced in advance so just ask at Salzburg train station about that remote but real possibility.
12:40 pm flight means when must you check-in for it? Leave as early as possible of course - I'd still suggest taking late evening train directly to Munich Airport and a hotel near it with shuttles to terminals.
Put your bags in Salzburg station locker for the day. Use the Bavaria Pass -30-35 euros total for both about but restricted to regional trains (buy in Salzburg station) - OK as evening before you would not be in a real rush - or book discounted 29 euro tickets each for day of flight on fast trains- have to change once in Munich I believe.
Check www.bahn.de/en for booking your own fast train discounted tickets - regional trains with Bavarian Pass no seat reservations possible - about an hour slower or so overall I think.

How long is that bike trip - does Mom care to travel alone - she could take a Sound of Music bus tour and you a bike tour.

I don't think you get another day in Salzburg. Look at the timing.
If your flight out of Munich is back to US (I presume that is where you are coming back since you mentioned Sound of Music), then it seems you need to be leaving Salzburg no later than 7am. At what time do you need to get up to make that train? And to wake up at that time, when do you need go to sleep the night before? This timing assumes there is no foul up with the transport operation.
I have my share of arriving at the station just to find "Verspätung" displayed all over the departure board. Sometimes I can detect this before getting to the station to start working on alternatives, but sometimes the problem just grew quickly - 5 min Verspätung when I left the hotel becoming 20 min Verspätung by the time I got to the station with a missed connection.

yes, y'all are probably right. that was my intention, to stay in salzburg rather than uprooting for a one nighter, but the anxiety is not worth it.
ok, will go into munich, and stay ???? At the airport ??? or somewhere in town and at least enjoy the evening prior in Munich??

You don't indicate the time of year of your travel, but presumably it's not winter. Still, most of the bike tours are "go" in sunshine and in rain; maybe better safe than sorry by reserving a small group tour in a van? Bob's Special Tour is what we chose; we were but 4 persons in the 6 person van on our tour--it was rather pleasant.
Just last weekend we had lunch at SternBrau. My local dish of Kasknocken was well-prepared, though the portion was larger than I expected, as a salad is served with it. DH had bratwurst, to his liking, though again a healthy portion of sauerkraut and fried potatoes is served with the dish. We'll certainly keep the restaurant on our list for return visits.

For a "functional" stay in Munich, you could check out the Motel One near Munich East station.
Your train from Salzburg will call there, and the S-Bahn S8 to Munich Airport will depart from there as well next morning.
The area around Munich East station - the district of Haidhausen - has many restaurants, in case you depart from Salzburg in the late afternoon already. Much nicer than the area immediately around Munich Central station.
Never rely on Munich's suburban trains (S-Bahn) to be on time!
Always take one train earlier than what would be in your comfort zone otherwise.
Assuming you will fly to PHL with AA: Your flight will depart from Terminal 1, sector B or C. It's less than a 5 min walk from the S-Bahn station.
Passport control and the immediately following security check in Terminal 1 is often really crowded and slow, so allow for some extra time. In fact, it's usually the security checkpoint which slows down the whole procedure. So while you may wait in line for 15-20 minutes, you won't wait for long after you did passport control.
And keep an eye on the signs as there is another passport control / access which can also be used (mostly). When in doubt, ask the staff that controls access to the checkpoint.
