Rome to FCO: 6:45 flight!

I'm just hoping for some feedback here, as I have looked at this every way that I can think of. And I have done searches here, and I swear I read every thread all the way through.

Here is my situation.

There are two of us. We will be leaving Naples on May 14 to get to Rome. Our flight leaves Rome at 6:45 from FCO on the 15th.

Airport hotels are super expensive and add a taxi ride to that to get to the airport for such an early flight.

Now, I'm thinking we get a room very near Termini, because we can just get off the train, check our bags at hotel, and have dinner nearby.

Then in the early morning, we take a private car service recommended here, straight to our airport terminal.

The other way means:
1. Train from Naples to Termini.
2. Leonardo Express to FCO
3. Hotel shuttle to hotel
4. In the morning, at lord knows what ungodly hour, a possible taxi ride or walk to the airport.

I know that there are two Hiltons at the airport, but at today's exchange rate, I could trade my car for a night in one of them.

I'm leaning toward the Naples > Termini > eat, sleep > limo to FCO for 35 to 40 euro.

Any thoughts? Any hotel recs at Termini?

Grazie, Debbie

I don't think you can get a train before 5:30 or so which won't get you to the airport in time to check in for a 6:45 flight.

Opps, I misread your post. Stay in Trastevere (it's on the side towards the airport) and have a nice dinner after wandering the neighborhood. Use www.romeshuttlelimousine.com for your early departure.

No need to stay near Termini in order to get a shuttle to the airport in the morning. Stay in the center, near Piazza Navona, where you can enjoy your last night in Rome and a nice dinner, and the shuttle will still pick you up. You'll probably have to have them pick you up at 4:00, but I've done that and still wouldn't trade my last night in Rome for a stay near Termini or at the airport!

I hear what you are all saying. However, our trip starts with 4 nights in Rome, so I am really just looking to keep costs down and make this as easy on myself as possible.

I was thinking of stretching that last day in Naples out as long as possible. Then possibly a quick dinner and go to sleep. I thought about staying near Termini to avoid a taxi ride to a hotel closer to the center. And to save money.

We have been to Rome several times. I like Rome. But if my choices were between an expensive night in the center, with a taxi from Termini to the hotel, just to sleep there, and maximizing my short stay in Naples, walking to a cheap hotel, and then limo to airport, wouldn't anyone agree? No?

We are staying in Trastevere for our Rome stay at the beginning of the trip, if that makes any difference.

There are some nice hotels near Termini, check Fodors, venere and other sites for recs. Maybe Vincenzo will see this thread, he knows of some hotels near Termini.

Have fun.

Stay in Fiumicino; it is literally 5 minutes from the terminal. A working coastal fishing town. A little gritty, as in a real town, but has several good seafood restaurants and easy to find a hotel. There are car services, busses, etc constantly to FCO.

We've had several 7am flights out of FCO and stayed in the city center. Just pre-arrange a taxi (or private car) to pick you up about 2.5 hrs before your flight. If you're in the historic center, the ride should take about 30 minutes.

I like longboatkey's suggestion for staying in Fiumicino the best. If you arrive early enough, then also check out Ostia Antica before turning in - Ostia Antica is 10 minutes from both the airport and Fiumicino.

We would definetly not make it to Fiumicino in time to see anything. As I said, just enough time to go to bed.

So, what are costs from Termini to Fiumicino (town, not airport)?

And what are costs to get from Fiumicino to FCO before busses, etc?

Anyone know?

So funny: I just found out that I'm one of those posters that only wants to be agreed with! Oh No!

I get so annoyed with others when they insist that their plan is right, despite all the best advice on Fodor's. Sigh...

I just can't see spending more time and money than I need to. I hope the very nice hotel at a good price within walking distance of Termini has a room for us. Venere shows it at 155 euro for our night. That is actually more than we are spending at any of our stops in Italy, but when in Rome, be prepared to spend a lot.

Then, hopefully the limo service won't be more than 45. Imagine spending all that money just to get an early flight!

At least we are traveling business class on FF miles...makes it a little easier to bear.

There are many nice ones that I have heard about near Termini. Which one did you choose?

You can use FF miles for the Hilton at the airport, we did last time and only paid about 50. for the executive floor which included small buffet late dinner and breakfast in their lounge.

I am in agreement with you on not wanting to rush back from whereever you are on your last day just to get into the hassle of staying in the city of Rome before the flight. I never get that. I would if I came back early in the afternoon but if I come in late from Naples I would rather just stay at the airport.

Hi there tuscan! Since you just want dinner and a good nights sleep do think about LongBoatKey's thoughts. You could taxi to the town of Fiumicino, have a good seafood dinner, probably the hotel will be less expensive and taxi back to FCO early morning.

I'd think about Longboatkey's suggestion too. But, for a hotel near Termini, we stayed at Gea di Vulancano & it was about 4 blocks or so from the train station. It looks like it would be 135 for you (it was 95eu in February.)
