Revised with your help! Pt 1 of 31 day trip: Venice-Please review!
Hello all,
Thanks to your many kind suggestions and sage advice, I've tweaked our Venice itinerary, and I think it looks like a good mix of art, water and fun for our family of 4 (DH, me, and two teenage sons: 14 and 16). Could you look it over for any possible improvements? Thanks in advance!
Venice:
Day 1:
arrive from JFK, check-in and explore; no specific plans, but we'll definitely ride the vaporetto along the Grand Canal
Day 2:
Morning guided tour of Doges' Palace from 9:00-11:00, then Basilica de San Marco at 11:30 (which I will pre-book so that we are sure to get in while it is illuminated)
Lunch will be paninis in the park, then we'll get in line to go up the elevator in the Campanile. The rest of the day is free, so perhaps I should move something up that is planned later?
Gondola ride before dinner. We'll find a station near our restaurant so that we can make our 8:00 reservation
Day 3:
Visit Rialto Market in the morning, and possibly the gondola maker if I can find it
Visit Accademia in the late morning, which I might pre-book for around 11:00am. Afterward, we'll eat at the pizza restaurant at the base of the Accademia bridge (assuming it's still there!) Then we can visit Ca' Rezzonico after lunch.
After Ca' Rezzonico, take the vaporetto to San Giorgio Maggiore and ride the elevator to see the view.
Day 4:
Visit Scuola San Rocco and Frari Church in the morning, then take a boat trip to Burano and/or Torcello for the afternoon.
This seems to be a nice itinerary, but I'd appreciate your thoughts!

which park would that be? so far as i know there isn't a park as such anywhere near St. Mark's and eating in the piazza is illegal. so you may need to go into a cafe and have something there.
looking at the rest of your itinerary, i think that I would tweak it a bit, like this:

after san marco, I suggest that you get the vaporetto out to the Lido - you could eat lunch on the boat or when you get there. you will waste a lot of time trying to find a picnic spot in Venice and waiting to go up the Campanile.

I would try to fit San Rocco and the Frari in here - perhaps saving the Accademia for Day 4. they aren't far from the Rialto and are well worth seeing as they are quite unique.
Day 4:
Visit Scuola San Rocco and Frari Church in the morning, then take a boat trip to Burano and/or Torcello for the afternoon.
personally i would prioritise the trip to the islands on your last day - you'll have seen loads of art by now and if you don't make it to the Accademia - tant pis!

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I'm so appreciative of the time you have taken to help me!
The "park" is Giardinetti Reali, which is along the waterfront west of the Piazzetta, and according to Rick Steves is the only legal place to picnic. However, I have been there and have to say that I can understand the LOL about it being a park!
annhig: The Lido is undoubtedly nicer for a picnic, although Rick Steves doesn't have much to say about it. If we go there for lunch do you think we should just skip the Campanile if we're going to San Giorgio Maggiore and riding the elevator there?
rhkkmk: That's a good idea to put in an early lunch-I've switched that around.
So, based on your input, here is the new and improved revised itinerary:
Day 1-same
Day 2- Doges Palace
-early lunch
-Basilica and possibly Campanile
Then we can walk around and just experience Venice on some of the back streets.
-Gondola ride before dinner
Day 3- Rialto Market (possibly pick up our breakfast there?)
-Frari Church
-Scuola San Rocco
-lunch somewhere
-possibly Ca'Rezzonico, but probably not
-Vaporetto to San Giorgio Maggiore
Day 4-morning boat trip to Burano (sounds like more of what we would enjoy than Torcello)
-lunch on Burano
-possibly Accademia when we return, or maybe not
-more wandering is more likely!
How does that sound?

In terms of campaniles, the view from San Giorgio is much better than from the campanile in the Piazza San Marco. And the waiting time will be less. I think that San Georgio may close for an hour at lunch time.

if you are wedded to your picnic idea and have decided not to do the San Marco campanile [which would not be my choice as i agree with Peter about the San Giorgio one being better] but don't want to go out to the Lido, you could get a vaporetto up to the giardino stop, where there is indeed a proper garden [where they hold the biennale art exhibitions]. after that you could have a look at the Arsenale [I think that there is a naval museum up there, though I've never been able to find it] and wander back through the many little streets where barely a tourist treads. nice "local" shops, at least one very nice deli, a gelateria, etc. etc.
otherwise - sounds great!

Looks pretty good.
To see a completely different (local, family oriented) vibe in Venice, on day 2, 3, or 4, I would consider taking the vaporetto to the Giradini stop and lunching outdoors somewhere along Via Giuseppe Girabaldi (or getting a "picnic" there and picnic in the public gardens).

Ann & bardo- thanks for the tip on the garden for a picnic spot, although I'm kind of in the air about a picnic at this point. If the boys want to just sit and have some peace for a bit, it sounds like a nice part of Venice.
Based on everyone's input, Torcello is definitely back on the itinerary! That would have been a big miss on my part--thanks for the save!
