Question where to stay for early morning flight from Florence (FLR)

Hello,

I will be in Florence for a night prior to my flight back to the US. My flight leaves at 6:30am from FLR airport on a Monday morning (in September), so I would have to get to the airport around 5am.

I will have most of the day Sunday to walk around on my own, so I was wondering if I should book a hotel in Florence and just an early morning cab or should I stay very close to the airport. I will have bags with me, so would it be a pain to drop by bags off at the airport hotel and get back into the city? It only looks like it's a few miles. It also looks (per Google maps) that some of the hotels are quite close to the airport. Would I be able to walk there? Would it be safe at 5am? Would it be easy to arrange a taxi from those locations?

Thanks!

Wherever you are in the city, an early morning taxi trip to the airport takes at most 15 minutes and the price is fixed (in the 20-25 euro range, according to time and number of pieces of luggage). If you stay near the airport, the price is the same and the time needed maybe 5 or 7 minutes less.

For peace of mind, reserve a taxi the evening before for a set time like 4.30am, by phoning at one of the taxi radio services like 055-4242 or 055-4798 or having your hotel concierge reserve.

Walking to the airport is not really an option. There is a one mile wide no-man's land between the city and the airport area, now partially occupied by construction sites. I would not be concerned about being mugged, but I would be concerned about being run over by some car in the scarce light.

If it were me, I'd reserve a taxi and stay in Florence. The airport isn't that far out, but it's not within walking distance of the historic areas of Florence.
