Question for photographers - Florence Ponte Vecchio Bridge...best time of day for photos?

Assuming it's a clear day for reflections in the water...is it better in the early morning or late afternoon? Thanks.

I have never been so I can't really comment on this specific photo op, but for reflections the general rule is early in the day, as there is less wind in the mornings normally. Any wind will ruffle the water and ruin the reflections. Plus there are less people about early in the day.

The Arno is flowing quite fast, so I'm afraid you won't get the reflections you are dreaming of. Anyway, I'd rather try in the early morning from the Uffizi side or the next bridge upstream.

I don't know how the Arno is flowing right now, but I was just there in early December and took some wonderful photos of the Ponte Vecchio both early in the morning and at night. Gorgeous reflections at both times. I got the best photos from the next bridge (at the Via Maggio, not toward the Uffizi), and this seemed to be where most photographers had set themselves up.

The river runs along the east-west axis of the city, which means you can choose, roughly, whether you have the sun in front of you or behind you -- and you could do well both in the early morning and toward the end of the day. Got some spectacular sunset pictures THROUGH the Ponte Vecchio as well as FROM the Ponte Vecchio. And on the days we were there, the reflections better from the south bank (opposite Uffizi) between the Ponte Vecchio and the Ponte alla Grazie, again depending on time of day. (And time of year, I suppose, for you.)

We were able to get some very good shots of the buildings reflecting in the water on both sides of the bridge in November 2007 in the early afternoon. It was a nice sunny day so the photos turned out superbly.

It more depends on how breezy it is rather than the time of day. This shot (www.pbase.com/annforcier/image/56792111) was mid day, but if you look at several others in the same gallery there is one from late afternoon, one from early in the day, and one from sunset. I was there for 6 days and tooks tons of shots and some days were just better than others.
