Walk out the front door of the Gare du Nord and take a taxi. Not even any steps. Why a private car?

I thought like London, it is cheaper to use private transport than taxi? And is taxi safe?

The difference is that the London car services are for getting in from heathrow which is outside London. Gare du Nord is in the center of Paris - a cab makes much more sense. Yes, cabs are safe . . . .

(You usually wouldn't take a car service from Waterloo in London either)

Totally safe. Get a Taxi Parisien at the taxi queue. There will be a small charge for your luggage and a small charge for originating at the gare so don't think you are being ripped off. It will probably be about 10E to a hotel in central Paris.

If you are traveling First class you can prebook a taxi while on the train for a fee. The lines for Taxis at Gare du Nord can be very long at times. If you are traveling off peak times it should be fine. Do not accept a taxi from anyone that may approach you in the station. Only take a taxi from the taxi line. When you get to the head of the train turn to the right and go out the exit, the taxi stand is right there.

I understand your confusion, but London is totally different from Paris when it comes to taxis. In London, even within the city you can always call a "mini-cab" which is essentially a private car service and not necessarily a tiny car. Your price will be less than a regular taxi. In Paris there isn't such a thing (that I'm aware of), but the taxis themselves are much cheaper. Just take a taxi from Gare du Nord.

I've found mini-cabs in London can sometimes be a total rip off...like the guy that our hotel called and he tried to charge 25 GBP from S Ken to waterloo at 7 Am on a Sunday! We paid and wrote a blistering letter to the hotel chain's main office and received a free night on our next trip and assurance that the hotel would no longer use that person's services! I always go with a "Black taxi". I like a meter ! In Paris..just get a TP and you'll be fine!

Jody, at the flat I rent in London, there is a little basket on the desk with cards from several companies. I always call, give my location and destination and they quote me a price. I'm amazed how much cheaper it tends to be for them to pick me up and take me somewhere instead of my going to flag down a taxi. Of course, it's really only practical for fair distances across town, nor for really short jaunts (which I'd always walk anyway).

Your hotel may have had a deal where they get a kick-back, so extra was added for them, I don't know.

Patrick, I am inclined to agree with you ...re kickback! But I don't think it was the Moat House policy...I think it was the employee that may have had an "agreement'!

If I did it on my own, I'd feel more comfortable with the price I'd negotiated. what really P***ed me off , I specifically asked for a "black" and I checked the cab , looking for the reg. plate..I thought I saw it,,,but at 7 Am I am not really with it! We usually don't even call or order a cab...just walk out and flag one down.

Hi, it's Marilyn. I'm envious! When are you going/went to Paris? I was there last winter and had a great time, although the only college french I could remember was to ask where the bathroom was located! Pity we never went to Paris together.
