Prauge--What is most convenient hotel location?
I'm going to Prague next year with some friends. One of the women has some difficulty walking, and so we are looking for a hotel that will be an easy walk to most of the sites. Of course, she'll probably opt for a cab on some occasions, but we'd like to stay where she can walk at least part of the time. I am confused by all of the information I find here and elsewhere. Can you tell me 1) which section of the city will be our best bet?(Mala Strana? Old Town?) and 2) can you specify a particular location within that area? I really don't need a specific hotel recommendation, though that would be nice (something that would hopefully be under $150/double/night?). Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

You will probably be best off near Old Town Square. It is just a short walk to St. Charles Bridge and Jewish ghetto. Mala Strana wouldn't be as good a location because of the hills, but you can take a tram to St. Vitus and Prague Castle after you exit the Malostranska metro stop. It is hard to take a cab in Prague. The Metro is easier. Do a google search to find a Metro map of Prague.

Hi M,
We very much liked our stay at the Pensione Dientzenhofer.
It is just a short walk from the Charles Bridge in Mala Strana and about your budgeted amount.

For many sightseeing venues, and for level ground, Old Town Square is most convenient imo. Being on either immediate side of the Charles Bridge is pretty central, but Mala Strana is much hillier, as noted, should you wish to browse in restaurants and shops.
As for taking taxis, it is best to have your hotel or B&B call one for you, as Prague's roaming taxis have a bad reputation for overcharges.
I've got a long file on Prague; if you'd like to see it, email me at

Just a wordof warning. Tourist Prague is riddled with cobblestone streets. Warn your friend to practice walking on some uneven surfaces and to get a good collapsible walking stick to aid in balance. My wife has a german model which was actually designed as a camera rest.
