Prague hotel questions

Anyone ever stay at any of these Prague hotels: Salvator, Hotel U Brany, Hotel U prince or Meteor Plaza? Would welcome thoughts or suggestions for trip in May.

I think you can find some pretty favorable comments on the Salvator here and on tripadvisor.com

I also think that the resources of www.athos.cz are very worthwhile - - you can even "chat live" with an agent in Prague, using ICQ.

Best wishes,

Rex

We stayed in the pension U Lilie in old town Prague last June, but I wouldn't recommend it without caveat-- it was a bit too simple (i.e. slightly shabby) for our tastes. However, it was clean, with a decent cold breakfast buffet, a small elevator, and rooms to accomodate four. But our additional "beds for two individuals" turned out to be one bed for two people who would share a double pull-out-- not what we needed. We were able to re-arrange, and it was only slightly uncomfortable for our two teens.
We were unhappy when we asked at the front desk for another set of sheets and a blanket. We were told unequivocably "No." (It was like a Saturday Night Live skit, with us saying "Just one more blanket?" and her saying emphatically "No!&quot Good thing the linen closet was easily accessible, and we just helped ourselves in order to create the fourth bed on the floor! Yet another downside was that we had to pay in CZK (cash) before we left; no credit cards.
We had also considered the Salvator, but didn't see it in our wanderings in Prague.
We did collect brochures from three hotels we wanted to remember in case we returned: The Hotel Neruda, the Hotel U krale Karla, and the Grand Hotel Bohemia.
The Neruda is on the hill going up to Prague Castle, near the Bazaar restaurant. Its brochure says it's four-star, an historical building reconstructed. Lobby had a nice contemporary feel, clean and well-done. Rack rate is 220 EUR in high season for a double. Its website is www.hotelneruda.cz.
The U krale Karla calls it a gothic building, rebuilt in 1639, renovated in 1993. It had more an old Prague feeling to it, old elegance. In Lesser Town, also near the Castle, only 16 double rooms and 3 suites. High season rates for double room deluxe is 6900CZK. Website: www.romantichotels.cz.
The Grand Hotel Bohemia is a five-star, in Old Town next to the Powder Tower (also a good location), 78 rooms and suites. It's a classic, old, elegant-looking place that looked charming, too. (No rate sheet in their brochure.) Website: www.grandhotelbohemia.cz
We didn't see any of the rooms themselves at these three hotels, but from walking through the lobby and asking at each desk, they looked promising.
Finally, we were glad we hadn't stayed at Wenceslas Square-- again a matter of personal taste. It is more a place of contemporary shopping, like for teens, with chain stores and McDonald's. Also, the only blatant pickpockets we saw were there. It does have its charms, but not for us.
Hope this helps. Sorry it's so long!
Prague is lovely, and May should be before the tourist crowds hit. Plan on wandering on foot and falling in love with it.

We stayed at the U Prince in October for four nights. Our room was a junior suite and had a balcony that overlooked the square (I believe it was number 21--you can see it on their web site).

The bedroom and sitting rooms were large and the modern bathroom was wonderful. The windows were soundproofed so you couldn't hear noise from the square, although we could hear the people walking on the wooden floorboards above us. The reception staff were helpful, but reserved, and the breakfast was ok.

For our next, hopefully longer visit to Prague, we'd probably stay at Hotel Josef (it was booked for this visit) or in the Mala Strana district.

Have a terrific trip.

Hi
I was looking into mid-range Prague hotels myself recently.
Some of those that consistently get good reviews (check tripadvisor.com as rex suggested) are the Josef, the Maximilian,
the Certkova, and the Hotel 7 Days.

I have a log file on Prague; if you'd like to see it, email me at

Have stayed twice at the Hotel U Prince for business. Excellent location in Wenceslas Square opposite the clock tower. Nice restaurant / bar on main floor - some of the dishes were a bit too salty but still filling - nothing to get too excited about - prefer Kampa Park for dining. Bathrooms were perfect - large, marble, powerful water stream. Heated floors. The bedrooms benefitted from antique furnishings and most had decent views. They have a lift for hauling luggage. Also a bar on the top floor with nice views of the square / city.

Have also stayed at the Hotel Josef - designer hotel with criminally small rooms but decent marble bathrooms. Not as centrally located as the U Prince.

Enjoy Prague it's a truly magical city!

I haven't stayed in those, I like the Maximilian (which is near the Josef mentioned above).

The U Prince is not on Wenceslas square, nor is the clock tower. That is Old Town Square where they are.

Salvator is a bargain, considering the location. I think some of the rooms have shared bathrooms, which is why it is so affordable. There are rooms with private bath, but you need to book early. The location is excellent, within walking distance to Old Town Square, the Municipal House, and all the big shopping areas. The metro & trams are also close by. If I stayed in a hotel, and wanted to save $, that's where I'd stay.
