Please suggest an itinerary landing in Milan and flying out of Paris, help!
My lovely wife has decided that she doesn't want to go to China, and has expressed an interest in landing in Milan, a few days in Cinque Terre, then to south of France {wine areas?) and then up to Paris for a few days, ( she loves Paris !). Three weeks, any thoughts appreciated.

Some practical considerations:
1. Renting a car in Italy with the plan to return it in France almost always means a big "drop charge". Return it in San Remo, which is convenient for taking the train (one hour) to Nice. Then rent again in France.
2. There are a variety of wine regions - - fairly dissimilar actually - - throughout the "southern half" of France (some people consider the "south of France" only it's most southerly 20% or so). See frenchwines.com or some threads htere on this forum where I have cited it in the past - - such as http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34543678 for example.
3. There is much to enjoy on the drive from the lower Rhone valley up to Paris - - but the train from Avignon to Paris is very fast - - and cheaper than the tolls plus the gas.
By the way, you're not "Marko", of a certain company in New Jersey, are you? (I'm John's brother, if you are)
Best wishes,

From the title of your post before I read the details, my suggestion would be into Milan, train to Venice, overnight train to Paris, fly out of Paris. With 3 weeks and other interests obviously you can do more.

Thanks guys, Sorry Rex I am an Aussie lad ! I hadn't thought of the drop off situation, so thanks. I like the idea of the food/wine component in the south of france, can you hop on and off the train as required ? We have spent time in Venice and the Lakes and don't feel the need to return (as yet!) We would like to spend some time in the CT. So fire away, any specific towns in the south of france we should not miss.

The car rental in France will be considerably cheaper than in Italy - - so if you're thinking to do a portion of this trip predominantly by train, I might suggest that you can stay with train in Italy - - and then, you can get out into the countryside and wine-producing regions of the Provence and the lower Rhone by car.
I have never been to the Cinque Terre myself, but a lot of people visit there successfully by train, I think.

From Milan you can train to the Cinque Terre via Genoa. (In Genoa you catch the locale to the CT) If I were you I would then train back to Genoa and then on to Nice where I would rent a car. Very doable. And scenic!
