Please pick my barcelona hotel!
My head is swirling.
Going with a friend for my first girls getaway to barcelona. First week of October.
I like over the top opulence but she doesn't like stuffy. Money isn't a deciding factor.
Want to be in example district or somewhere near there. Friends concern is nothing to do near there or food.
We're alone and want to be safe in well lit area at night.
Choices are:
el palace - don't know if "stuffy"
Hotel 1898
Hotel bagues
Majestic
Any thoughts? Thank you!

Exiample is a perfectly safe area and you can walk all over from there. I have stayed at the Majestic ( personally I wouldn't stay there again) we stayed at a quite nice hotel last year which I think was called Hotel Cram, this was nice and virtually next door to Cinc Sentits ( restuarant)
A REALLY great hotel in a good location is Hotel Grand Central, this is close to El Born and Barri Gotic districts and walkable to many places.( it's also very close to a metro stop)
.. That said I actually like the Eixample area.

El Palace and the Majestic are both classic properties. EL Palace underwent a total renovation a couple of years ago and is beautiful. The Majestic has been our first choice for years. It's also undergone some renovation and has the best rooftop lounge for views and cocktails in the city.
The 1898 is one of the top 4-star luxury hotels in the city, but it and Bagues, another gem, are at the top of Rambles, which can be busy most of the day.
One hotel you might consider is located at the bottom of Rambles, the Hotel DO Plaça Reial, another 5-star GL property to compete with the Palace and Majestic. Quite special.

Take a look at medieval, modern and tranquile Hotel Neri. Had the by far best hotel stay ever here a year ago. Outstanding in every aspect. In the Gothic quarter, close to the Cathedral and heart of the city Plaça de Catalunya. Large and very laid-back roof-top terrace with bar for hotel guests. http://www.hotelneri.com/en/
