PLEASE help - Germany, France,Switzerland,Italy itinerary
Arrive Frankfurt, take Lufthansa shuttle or train to Strasbourg
Strasbourg
Freiberg/Staufen
Lucerne
Chur to take Bernina Express, would need at least 1 night
Tirano arrive on BE and take train to Turin
Turin
Rome to fly home
So as you can see too much to see and too little time. We have been to Lucerne and Rome and main reason to return to Rome is flight home. Always prefer at least three nights each place. Suggestions for changes to itinerary and accomodations appreciated. Many thanks!!!!

denisea, thank you.Oops, when composing post I know I put we had 15 nights, but obviously changed it and left that rather important tidbit out. Since I didn't have any replies earlier I made some decisions and came up with this itinerary: Strasbourg, Freiberg, Lucerne,Turin and Rome, with three nights in each place. We will not take Bernina Express. Yes, flights are booked and we are covering a greater distance than we usually do. I found USAir flights out of Charlotte and back into Charlotte with a decent fare. I was so happy to avoid having to go to NY, Detroit or Chicago airports as we normally do that the greater distance in Europe seems worth it.I have made hotel reservations for Strasbourg and Freiberg, still working on others. Any hotel recommendations for Lucerne, Turin and Rome appreciated. I will go and check my journal or my replies on the forum since I have recommended it to others to see where we stayed in Rome and if available stay there again. I do remember it was near the Spanish steps.

Jean, we are going early September. Budget, hope to not go over $300 and prefer $200-250. In Rome that will probably not happen. The two I have booked have not been expensive so I am willing to spend more on others. Looking at Hotel des Alps for Lucerne and trying to decide if it is worth the extra $50.00 for a riverfront balcony room. We do appreciate an updated, comfortable, clean place and like to be in the historic center.

In Rome, take a look at Albergo del Senato. It is where we will stay if we go back to Rome. We went on hotel points last time (which is why we didn't stay there) but many Fodorites highly recommend it. It is in the same piazza as the Pantheon.

What do you mean with Freiberg (mentioned together with Staufen/Krozingen)?
Is Lucerne a must? Otherwise you could check the more scenic itineraries through the Alps of Western Switzerland and Aosta Valley.
You can do that from Lucerne too, but it would get a long journey:
Lucerne dp 6.55 by Golden Pass Panoramic Express via Brunig Pass - Interlaken - Gstaad to Montreux ar 12.13, visit of Chillon castle and small Lake Geneva cruise, Montreux dp 17.40 - Aosta 20.15/21.23 - Turin ar 23.32
The mountains and castles of Aosta Valley would of course deserve a longer stay or at least a journey by daylight.
