I need to leave my rental car for three days in Rome (middle of the three week trip so I can't drop it off). Searching this board I found suggestions as to parking at the Villa Borghese underground lot (thanks Cheryl, Rex, etc). My question is - does anyone know exactly how to get there from the ring road. I'll be coming from Perugia? Also, on the maps there appear to be at least three or four "P" signs for the Borghese gardens. Is one lot better than the others, does it matter, and if so, which one do I want? I know lots of you have driven and parked in Rome. I need some good advice and moral support here. Thanks

I don't mean to over-simplify your problem, but why don't you just have your hotel take car of finding a parking place? All of the hotels I've stayed in, have been able to do this. Give it a try, anyway. And if you aren't staying at a hotel, I apologize.

Beacause I think driving to the hotel, which is much more in the center of the city, would be far more difficult than driving to the Borghese gardens. The whole point of parking there is to avoid driving into the center of Rome.

I'd only comment that having driven in Rome a number of times, I find it to be no worse than any large city. The most important thing is to know where you are going by studying a detailed city map ahead of time. It might even take a couple of loops around one-way streets, but with patience you can do it. And by the way, the Borghese Gardens are also well within the city, and traffic around that area isn't really much different than traffic anywhere else in Rome. If you can drive to the Borghese Gardens, you can drive on into Rome to your hotel. Ask the hotel if they can help with either a recommended route into their place, or simply a recommendation on whether to drive to the hotel. They might also recommend somewhere else to park.

Even though I recommended the Borghese underground car park, I agree that the first place you should try is the car park that your hotel recommends. For example, at Cesari, they will direct you to a place called Autorimessa (sp?) Trevi, less than 300 yards (on foot, walking back) from the front door of the hotel.<BR><BR>I recommended Borghese for anyone with a big van.
