A few questions on Rome

Two couples planning a trip including 4 days in Rome. Several questions... We are driving to Rome and wanting to park our car for the duration of the time there. Looking for a hotel ($200 range) near the outskirts of Rome proper preferably near Metro. ANy suggestions? Also any leads on a good private tour person just for our group?

Many will argue that it's bad manners... to give you an answer that is _not_ an answer to the question you asked...

... but...

I would recommend _not_ doing what you propose, unless there is some compelling reason to stay near some specific "outskirts" location. One of the nicest things about having a car is the ability to handle your luggage ONCE. From your trunk, to the hotel lobby, period. There are plenty of places to park a car for a few days in Rome. The big Borghese sottoterraneo, for example, But there are plenty of other parking garages.

And visitng Rome means staying _in_ Rome, in my opinion, and the opinion of countless others. My brother-in-law just returned from a church trip in the fall; the group was in a hotel, 10 miles out. A yucky 45 minute commute to get into Rome each way, every time.

Drive in. Stay in.

Best wishes,

Rex

Hi dks, well I wanted to post what rex posted but didn't..but I have to say I sure agree with his advice to you for what it is worth. We always drove to the hotel and they took care of garaging our rental car while we were in Rome. But probably going to a parking garage on your own would be less expensive.

A good part of the charm of Rome is being there in the evening. I think that would probably be difficult to do if you are located outside of Rome. But not having stayed in the outskirts of Rome I really don't know. Anyway, just food for thought. Wishing you a beautiful time in Italy.

We drove our rental car right up to the front door of the Hotel Alimandi (near the Vatican Museums) and the hotel people parked it in their lot till we were ready to leave Rome.

Good advice from REX. Either hotel parks the car for you at an overcharge or you do it yourself in one of those underground parkings. Please drive in, once because we were with friends we stayed at the Sheraton and it was terrible....
