To Rome by CAR?
We will be at a villa near Lucca and would like to take a day trip to Rome (yes, i know that sounds crazy - but, our family would like to SEE ROME!). We CAN take a train from Pisa but it's costly for 10 people. I'd appreciate any and all thoughts re. driving into Rome...parking etc. One idea is to drive as far as Fiumicino and use the AP parking then take the fast train in to the Termini stazione. - or maybe some of you have better ideas. I'd like to hear them.
Thanks...

You've already said the best idea--don't do it.
Now I'll try to be helpful . . .
Pparking at FCO and taking the train into Rome will be costly for 10 people--it costs about 10 euros each way for the express, 5 euros for the local.
Driving all the way seems to me the best idea for your large group. Just be prepared for it to take a lot longer than expected, once you actually reach Rome traffic. I'd expect it to take 3-4 hours in each direction.
Someone might be able to recommend a station at the end of a Metro line that has good parking, which might help avoid some of the traffic.
Once you reach Rome, what do you hope to do?

All true! Crazy idea. I recommended the same to friends last year - if you don't have at LEAST 3,4,5 days - don't go! Our daughter-in-law had mentioned Rome to me today so I started working on how they could do it. However, to see the Vatican, Colosseo,Forum, Castel San Angelo, Piazza Navona, Janiculum and the list goes on and on...no way! Rome is too wonderful to just breeze through. I'll discourage it unless they can stay - but we're renting an expensive villa so they can make great day trips from there and still have a fine time.
Thanks! You brought me back to reality

If people want to go to Rome they should go to Rome
From Lucca it is a 2 1/2 hour drive to Orvieto where there is a train station and easy parking. The train into Rome runs about every hour and some of the trains are just an hour trip.

While strolling around Venice, we bumped into people we knew from home. We were astonished to learn that they were staying in a hotel in Rome and this was just a day trip to Venice.
So - I guess where there's a will there's a way...

FYI
train from Orvieto
R takes 1hr 20 mins and costs 1st-11.00, 2nd-7.10
IC takes 1hr and costs 1st-19.50, 2nd-15.00
You might qualify for Amica or family discount if you purchase ahead.
I would expect the trip with time to park the car, get to the station, wait for train, and so forth, to take 4-5 hours each way depending on R or IC choice.
