Orvieto Hotel: La Badia or Piccolomini?
Hello,
We are stopping in Orvieto for an evening during our upcoming honeymoon in Italy. Which hotel would you recommend, Hotel La Badia or the Hotel Piccolomini? We've read some negatives about La Badia but the overall description sounds amazing - is it worth the price?

I haven't stayed at either, but as far as location goes, La Badia is outside of Orvieto, while the Palazzo Piccolomini is in the city. Both have restaurants, but while you'd almost have to eat at La Badia, at the Piccolomini you would be able to choose whether to eat there or at another restaurant in Orvieto.

We stayed at La Badia years ago. The most distinctive thing about it was the dining room (in the old Abbey.). It was very nice, but I generally prefer being in town, especially when the town is as lovely as Orvieto. it is so wonderful to stroll around the town after dinner, stop in a bar or cafe, etc. That is often when you see the locals and get a feel for life.
But sorry, I don't know Piccolomini.

We stayed at La Badia four years ago. Had a very nice room with great view of Orvieto. The room was large, had a good size sitting room and wonderful bathroom. We did eat dinner at the hotel's restaurant and it was delicious and the setting very romantic. We were only there one night but enjoyed our stay very much.

Hi KK,
As the others have said, La Badia is not IN Orvieto. We did stay at the Palazzo Piccolomini 4 years ago and liked it. It's located at the end of town above the parking garage (opposite end of where the train station is) and a series of underground escalators take you right there. It you have luggage, the hotel will pick you up at the transportation center on top of the parking garage.
The rooms were comfortable and a little on the dark side. But, hey what do you expect in a palazzo hundreds of years old? Breakfast was good. Many fabulous restaurants steps away.
I definitely would want to stay in Orvieto. Wonderful, beautiful town. Artsy, modern and ancient all at the same time. Evening strolls are wonderful. Be sure to take the Sottoteranio (SP?) tour of the caves under the town. Facinating!

We went to the Tourist Info office in Orvieto and got a room at a lovely hotel in town...Avianca Bianco...it has it's own parking garage and is a very pretty place. We really liked Orvieto -- they have some beautiful ceramic that I wish I'd purchased because back in the States those $50 bowls and plates are now going for $200.It is a very "craftsy" place with a lot of creative people.
