Need Help! First time in Spain the month of August
My friend and I have a trip to Spain planned from the 16th of August through the 29th. We are scheduled to arrive in Barcelona the 16th and have no plans until August 25 - 29th, where I will be staying in Ibiza. I'm not sure how many days to spend in Barcelona. If we should head to Madrid or Valencia or Costa Del Sol for a few days... Or should we head north to the Canary islands.. I'm open to any suggestions/ recommendations..

going by train or car or plane or mix? Makes a difference on recommendations - spanish trains now fly almost at 200 mpn - meaning you could go to Seville from Barcelona in about 5 hours - with Madrid about half-way in between. In cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, etc a car is useless and the scenery in between these cities is unremarkable - for lots of great info on Spanish trains: www.seat61.com - good news on discounted train tickets that can make a train trip cheap - www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
Consider flying from say Seville to Ibiza.
There is also I believe an overnight train between Barcelona and Seville.

"Or should we head north to the Canary islands"
Spain has two main bunches of islands, the Canaries which are way SOUTH off the coast of Africa and the Balearics which are to the south east in the Med.

Not sure if we should rent a car or just take the Spanish trains. I found this road trip online and it looks like a great idea. Thoughts ...

Well, Seville and Andalusia get really hot in the summer, like 110 degrees F. I'd avoid it. The coast is a little cooler, but still....
So maybe you do want to go north, like San Sebastian. Get some guidebooks and read about Barcelona and San Sebastian as well as other destinations in Spain.

August is the hottest time of the year. Barcelona and Ibiza will be bearable but Andalucia, albeit beautiful, will be hell. Madrid will be hot, too. Be aware that many places (like shops, restaurants, museums) have no A/C in Spain.
As said, the northern coast will be pleasant. The Basque country and Cantabria have much to offer - scenic coastline, picturesque villages, lively cities, excellent food. Check out places like Donostia, Santander, Santillana del Mar, Picos de Europa.
Or drive into the Pyrenees, including the French side. From Barcelona, head northwards. Cadaques is a most beautiful town and, after crossing the border, Ceret is a beautiful city. You might visit Carcassonne and other places in France.

perhaps it's far of your plans but if you are arriving on 15th august to Barcelona, there is the festivals of Gracia quartier..they are very typical with lots of streets decorated for the own neighbours, activities, etc...
here some photos in the official webpage from the last year:
