Munich Trip in February, please help!!!!!!!
Hello,
I am travelling to Germany with one other person for the first time (neither of us have ever been!) and are going for 9 days in February (13th-21st). We have decided on Munich because of the landscapes and activities it offers. We are interested in outdoor activities.. such as walks, hikes, bike rides, amazing views/sights! We do not want to ski however we would be interested sledding or snow trekking. We also loveeee food and beer enjoy experiencing the culture through its cuisine!! We are interested in seeing small beautiful towns with lots of character and history.
We will be flying into Munich and would like some advice on things to do, places to eat and places to go in the city. Also we would like to maybe take day trips to see some towns, or experience activities like the ones stated above (great views, walks, or snow fun, etc). Staying in Munich for a few days and then leaving to travel surrounding areas for several days is also an option. Anything! We would love adventure and culture. Advice??? Thanks!!!

I spent 7 days in Munich in March and while we enjoyed mild dry weather, there was a limit to how much time we could spend in parks and eating outdoors. We did enjoy the open food markets and many of the outdoor venues have heaters and provide fleece wraps to their patrons, so not all is lost -- but you should also investigate some indoor activities, or else come dressed very, very warmly.
My interest in going to Munich was its museums, and of the many I saw, I thought the most rewarding were the Bavarian National museum, the Lenbachaus (with its Blaue Reiter collection) and the Glyptothek. But Munich has quite a wide varitety of different types of museums. Munich also has a great many temporary exhibits in its museums so its worth looking those up in advance, as well as concerts.

There's a beer festival in February.
A train trip to Salzburg would be nice.
The Deutsches, a tech and science museum, is a must.
Some ideas for day-trips are here but I haven't perused them to see which would be favorable in winter;

Wow, you will be there for the end of Fasching / Carnival. There should be loads of activities going on.
I just googled Fasching and found this site that may be helpful:

If you want to be sure of snow (Munich may or may not have snow in Feb) head south to the Zugspsitz which has several options for sightseeing and winter activities besides skiing.
Also if you want there are a number of Mad Ludwig's palaces - besides the dreaded Neuschwanstein. We prefer the Linderhof and also Herrenchiensee - which is on the way to Salzburg. It's located on an island in the middle of the "see". But at that time of year you need to check out when there are tours in English and time your arrivals - unless you don;t mind tours in German.
There are a bunch of great places in Munich including the Town Hall/Clock, Residenz and Nymphenburg (but in the suburbs) - but know for it's gardens and fountains which will not be anything in February.

Hi tuppertox,
I live in Garmisch, about 90 minutes south of Munich at the base of the Alps, and this would be a nice spot to get your walks, hikes, and amazing views and sights. However, some old-timers are predicting a LOT of snow this winter, and only a few hiking trails are groomed in the winter. So if there is snow, your walking & hiking will be curtailed.
If there is a lot of snow, you can easily do some snow-shoeing. You can rent snow shoes at any ski-rental place, and ask them for suggestions for trails.
The walking trails around the lakes (e.g. Eibsee, 90 minutes) are usually passable.
It's really not a great time for biking either, again too much snow & ice on the streets. You may be able to bike some in Munich itself though.
Other great towns for an outdoorsy base would be Mittenwald, Oberammergau, and Füssen.
Have fun as you plan!
