My wife and I are travelling to Munich in September for 4 nights to the Oktoberfest, we are flying out of Budapest home. We have 18 nights including the 4 nights in Munich, the 4 nights in Munich have been booked and now I am planning the rest of the trip.

I have the following in my mind:

1. Munich 4 nights.

2. Prague 4 nights.

3. Vienna 3 nights.

4. Budapest 4 nights.

I have 3 extra nights with this. I am looking at either staying a night or two in Regensburg on my way to Prague and add a night at one of the other places such as Budapest or Prague.

Another option is to go to Salzburg from Munich and then go to Vienna to Prague and down to Budapest. This seems a bit of an illogical route.

Any comments on the itinerary? I would like to go to another place or two in any of the countries. Regensburg is not set in stone and I am open to any other suggestions.

We are in our forties and love eating out and having a leisurely holiday, strolling through the towns and enjoying a glass of wine along the way.

It would help (me) to know why you chose those cities to possibly add another night to (as opposed to Vienna).

Also, why you chose Regensburg.

The answers to those questions might help us make some recommendations.

In terms of routing, am I correct in assuming you are doing this by rail?

Are you going by train or car - if car beware of steepdrop-off fees for renting in one country and returning in another. Trains are great and if just going to those large cities, as most want to do their first time there, hop the train- for loads of great train info check www.seat61.com - great info on discounted train tickets; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

Regensberg is fantastic - a good choice to see a smaller but not small town.

In Vienna you may want to do a fab day trip to the vineyard-strewn Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site - about an hour by train to the west - train to Melk, see the famous abbey there and then take the boats to Durnstein, lovely small wine town with a famous ruined castle where Richard-the-Lion-Hearted was once held for ransom and then bus to Krens to return by train to Vienna: gorgeous Wachau Valley.

If you want fully flexible travel to hop any train anytime just about check out the Eastern European Railpass - though discounted tickets thru the national rail sites like www.bahn.de/en for Germany or www.oebb.com for Austria, etc may be cheaper.

Don't know why you think that's illogical, Bokka. My spouse and I took that route when we went to Central Europe. We enjoyed Salzburg so much we returned to it before returning to Munich and home.

I will be using trains.

1. I am South African and our currency is currently very weak, I chose Prague and Budapest for the extra nights as it seems to be cheaper than Vienna.

2. I chose Regensburg because it is a stop on the Munich to Prague train ride. It looks like a good smallish town to spend a night or two after the Oktoberfest. I am open to suggestions in the area or if it is a waste of time I will travel onwards to Prague. Maybe adding a place in the Czech Republic?

3. I have looked at the Salzburg option but the trip going up to Prague and all the way down to Budapest again seems like an unnecessary loop. Salzburg does look amazing though.

I am open to any suggestions, all my research has made me more confused.

Salzburg is a charming town with a lot to see and do - as well as sights in the nearby mountains. (Your other places are not mountainous so this would be a great addition to me.)

the most direct way between Munich goes not by train but direct buses Munich to Prague - bus is fasteer than the train route via Regensburg but bus is an hour or more quicker and with fares as low as 19 euros. By train however Regensburg is right on the way and is IME a fabulous city with more historical structures in its city centre than any other town in Germany the tourist office once sai. I agree that Vienna is not a cheap city to visit. Salzburg can actually be visited from Munich and if your main notion is to visit the "Old Town" area you can go back and forth by rail in 1.5 hours each way. Makes for a long day but it can be done.

Personally, I prefer some rail travel to the bus idea if for no other reason than mobility while aboard.

I also prefer rail to bus, we used the rail system in Spain and it was superb.

Any recommendations for smaller towns or cities in the Czech Republic or Hungary that is on our way?

I am thinking of doing the Salzburg leg. One or two nights?
