We will be landing in Munich and need to arrive in Prague for business 9 days later later. We know we'd like to visit Budapest, but where else would you suggest? This trip will be in late August 2006.

Vienna? Are you driving, going by train or flying? That would make a difference in the recommendations.

We are planning on renting a car.

Since Vienna is between Munich and Budapest it seems like a reasonable addition.

I assume you are aware there may be a hefty drop charge for a rental car or are you planning to return it to Munich?

For fine baroque cities I suggest Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Ceske Budejovice (with a day in Cesky Krumlov), and Prague. That gives just a day to each city, so you may prefer Munich, Salzburg, Budapest, Vienna, and Prague. To relax in smaller beautiful places, cheaper and with plenty to see, try Cesky Krumlov, Trnava, Nitra, Budapest and Prague. For good hill walking, again cheap, try the Bohemian Woods south of Ceske Budejovice, the country south of Zvolen, Budapest, and Prague.
