Munich

Any suggestions for lodging while in Munich for the Christmas markets. There will be 3 adults so we will need a triple room or apartment.

I think it is always hard to say what your budget is until you see what the market dictates. I know with 3 adults and it being Xmas Martet time we will need to pay more. I would be happy with $150 know $200. is a very good possiblity. Cleaniness and location are important, not luxury.

For initial ideas and budgets I always look at the hotel reviews on Tripadvisor first and gauge from there. Or you can look at Venere.com, there are reviews there also.

But in general, Munich is an expensive city.

A triple in high season and centrally located is a tall order, though possible I'm sure. I cannot suggest anything that meets all those criteria. However, if you decide you need/want to up the budget...

...the Hotel Concord is modest, clean and less than a 5-minute walk to Marienplatz. It's equidistant from the Marienplatz U-bahn stsation, the Kammerspiele tram station and the Isartor tram station. Very nice but basic rooms.

Triple rooms are €195 to €295, contact them to see what rate they can offer.

I'm not sure what the winter rates are - we spent a little less than $200/night for a double in May.

A budget option would be the tiny Pension Linder (9 rooms total) - you can get two rooms (even with en suite WC and bath!) within your budget. My son stayed there on a trip he took and reported it was clean and had a very helpful staff. It is also a 5-minute walk to Marienplatz.

Cleanliness is not something you have to worry about.

A central location is really important. There are certain hotels that people just love, great reviews, lots of Bavarian charm, great neighborhood etc but many of those highly recommended hotels are quite far from the center. I have done this. A false economy.

So - on the map you will notice a sort of distorted ring about the very center of the city. You want to stay as close as possible to this ring, preferably inside it.

You will find it very easy to find very nice and very inexpensive hotels elsewhere in Germany but not in Munich. Think of it as a balance - if you spend only $80 per night at say the Hotel Gerberhaus in Rothenburg, you have that much more money for your Munich hotel.

In Munich, the Platzl and the Torbrau are probably the best overall deal for price, atmosphere, and location. I like the Hotel Opera, in Lehel. Lehel is a really nice area wedged between the river, the Englischer Garten, and the core center. There are other hotels in this neighborhood that I think are close to your price range.

Many years ago I stayed at the Blauer Bock. Worth a look. I believe they have modernized it.
