Madrid - best area to stay in with children

We will be coming to Madrid by train from Granada gettng into the Atocha Station. We will be there for 2 nights and 1 day and then fly home. We would like to be close to the sights, not too far from the airport, and in a safe location. We are currently booked at a hotel near the Atocha metro. It is about a 10 minute taxi ride from the train station. It looks like it's not far from Retiro park and the Prado. We will be there in late December and know it will be cold. Please advise if this is a good location or if we should look elsewhere. We plan to go to the musuems, the bullfighting museum, Plaza Mayor, the Reina Sofia, and other typical sights.
Thanks!

If you've effectively only got one full day then I'd recommend somewhere near Retiro/Prado etc. Puerta del Sol area is very central too. Can't recommend any particular hotel, sorry, as we visit family in Madrid. December will be cold true!

10 min from Atocha can be in any direction. What is the name of the hotel?
You cannot be close to all attractions AND the airport in any big
city.

We just returned from Spain with our 2 boys. 12 and 9. I think the place stay would be on the street with the Prado. Retiro is a 5 minute walk from the Prado, Atocha is a 5 minute cab drive. Plaza mayor is a little further walk....10-15 minutes, but if it's cold it easiest to take a taxi. I wouldn't stay in puerto del sol, yes it's central, but not as nice, pretty, and relaxing as near Prado. We saw a lot of hotels across from the museum. We stayed a bit further up between the plaza ciebles and Puerta de alcala at splendom suites, which was nice because we had an apartment. We walked everywhere, but it wasn't cold.
