lyon train stations
Does anyone know the difference between the Lyon Perrache and the Lyon Part Dieu train stations? If I had a choice between the 2 , is one more convenient if i'm staying in Lyon and wanting to make day trips? merci

If you have the option, I believe Perrache is better, closer to sightseeing. We had no choice, our train was coming from Geneva and we had to get off at
Part-Dieu. It was not too bad, a short taxi drive took us to our hotel in Place Bellecour.

If you want to be walking distance to the places of (touristic) intesrests, pick Lyon Perrache that's located in Presqu'ile inbetween the Rhône and the Saône rivers, closer to the older and much more pitoresque part of Lyon, Vieux-Lyon, Basilique de Notre Dame de Fourvière, etc.
When I take a train from Geneva for Lyon, I usually take one that goes till Perrache via Part-Dieu. Even if your train does not go farther than Part-Dieu, it's easy to change to one of the many local trains that link between two. This is an alternative to taking a taxi that Graziella mentioned.

Part-Dieu station is probably served by slightly more trains/lines than Perrache, but in terms of location, Perrache is more central. Part-Dieu station is also bigger and more modern than Perrache.
If you are looking for a hotel in the vicinity of either station, avoid staying south of Perrache station.
The Part-Dieu area is good for transport connections and shopping, but not so handy for sight-seeing. That said, central Lyon is compact and well served by public transport (bus, tram and metro), and the two stations are directly linked by a tram line.

I've taken the TGV from Paris to Lyon, arriving at Part Dieu, and stayed at a hotel across the parking lot from the station. It is correct to say that there is nothing to see in that area. I chose it as a base, and explored from there every day. There are bank machines in front of the station, a post office nearby and a T-station (metro) right in front of the station.
If you are going to be exploring outside of Lyon, I believe this is the staiton you want. I did a 1/2 day trip to Chambery, leaving on SNCF train from this station.
Lyon is not very large, and the metro system is quite good, so staying anywhere in the central part will not be an inconvenience. No need to take cabs. Perrache would be better for walking to sites.
It's a great city to visit. If you do stay near Perrache, try Brasserie Georges.
