we are booked into the sokos hotel helsinki
tried the helka but it was booked out
it is on kluuvikatu 8 and can be reached from the airport by bus 615 or the finnair buswhich drops you at the railway
then it a 300 m walk from the railway to the hotel
it seems very well located and not terribly expensive but not cheap either

We <u>were</u> planning to stay at the Baltic Hotel Imperial in Tallinn http://www.imperial.ee/index.php?lang=eng&main_id=165 , but decided not to go because our friends in Turku, Finland wanted us to stay a little longer. It seems they offer a 50% discount to seniors over 55.

I stayed at the Klaus K Hotel, and loved the location. The rooms were great, and the restaurants in the hotel were excellent as well. It was modern and convenient, but not a chain.

bob...the venerable Hotel Torni (1931)served us well several years ago...it's a noted, historic buildng close to all intown locations. Dunno what the rates are now. My guess is, you would be very satisfied with it. It's now part of the Sokos chain.

stu (don't give Helsinki short shrift..it's an interesting city..the Sibelius monument is one of the world's most unique)

bob...can't give you much help on Estonia....I was in Tallin last there when it was SSR...grimsville...stayed in a walkup hovel whose female manager was a spitting image of Brunhilda..while a picture of handsome Joe Stalin adorned her kitchen.

Bob and Karen...here are some of my old scanned shots of Helsinki and other parts of Finland..Frankly, I would skip Tallin and spend the time visiting Turku, Tapiola (the garden suburb of Helsinki) and Porvoo (classic Finnnish fishing village). (see pix)

Remember, these are scanned from years ago...they can be enlarged by clicking the magnifying glass icon.

Knowing what I do about you two, you will have a great visit no matter what you decide to do...

Helsinki and Tallinn together make for a very nice 3-4 days of touring. For more, see our phototravelogue at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=...&x=0&y=-95hdl3

For Tallinn, I stayed at the Merchant House Hotel, which is central, around the corner from the town square (Raekoja plats). Great location, comfy rooms, and a decent buffet breakfast. They have a free private sauna too.

I have to disagree with Stu on this one. I've spent a day/night in Turku and a daytrip in Tallinn. Nothing wrong with Turku and its sights, but I thought the old town in Tallinn combined with the ferry trip over was much more interesting and a greater contrast to Helsinki.

Can't help with hotels near the sights in either city, sorry.

Hi Bob,
Would recommend both, Tallinn and Helsinki. One compliments another. In Helsinki we are staying in Crowne Plaza this July, looks good. In Tallin I would recommend lovely appartment chain www.oldehouse.ee, good price self catering in historic Old Tallinn, beautiful appartments, price varies and reasonable. My In-laws (both over 70) loved it. Would also recommend Hotel Olympia if you looking for a good price,St Petersburg in Old Town is lovely but more money. Three Sisters in old town is the best ever but dear. If you go to Estonia there is a lovely beach town (Summer Capital of Estonia) Parnu , less than 80 miles from Tallinn, the best hotel we have ever been to - Ammende Villa, 1st class service and feels like you have stepped back to 1920's- it was built by a rich german who specially designed this building for his daughters wedding in 1905- very unique and worth just travelling there for this experience.
Hope this helps,
