Lappeenranta Accommodation

Hi
We are a group of 4 Australians travelling around Scandinavia this coming September. We are wanting to stay in Lappeenranta for about 3 nights but try as I might I haven't yet found anywhere around the 100Euro per night per room. Does anyone know of a B&B or Pension or small hotel in the area?? All the websites I have tried only give me the larger expensive hotels.
I have had great success with this forum in planning previous trips... so I hoping for your help!

May I ask why Lappeenranta?

It is a small town, and there are only about half a dozen places that can be called by a name "hotel". Which ones you have checked? Because over 100 euros/night sounds strange, particularly in September. Russians usually come just for day trips, and summer guests are no longer there, so the prices should be very reasonable.

Why donīt you get a cottage instead? There are plenty of those, all four fit in one cottage, and you have your own sauna, own beach and own rowing boat. That is the typical way to live in that area.

You can check both hotels and cottages from here: http://www.lappeenranta.fi/?deptid=13107

And if it is not specifically Lappeenranta you want, there are also other nice places in southern Karelia.

BTW, you should put the name of the country in the title. If this had not been on the first page I would not have seen it. I donīt think many people have even heard of Lappeenranta.

Hi Elina
Many thanks for your reply... will look at the website today.
Why Lappeenranta... we have friends who live there, we have been before a few years ago and this time there is more of us and we won't all fit in their home and we don't want to put them to the huge amount of trouble they went to last time. We had a traditional sauna by the lake on our last visit... just fabulous!!! The food also is amazing.. can't wait to get there.
Thanks for the tip about putting the country in the heading... I did think of that after I posted it.

Hey, mates from the wonderful land of Oz....Enjoyed a nice stay in Lappeenranta about six years ago while driving a large chunk of the country. Stayed at the Sokos Lappeee Hotel in the heart of town for less than $100 in Finnmarks.....now the rate has skyrocketed to 170E's, just under $200..wish I could help..it's a charming, isolated town with very friendly townspeople and the best public saunas in Finlandia. Sorry..

Hi Stu
Yes wonderful place... and how the prices have risen...but that website from Elina is fantastic. I have found that the Scandic hotel is within our price range.. which is just great, although the cabins you can hire for a week are very very tempting.. but we shall see how much time we want to spend there. So much to see and we are doing a side trip to St Petersburg as well, then off to Copenhagen to finish off. We are starting with a trip on the Hurtigruten which should be great.
Many thanks again for your help and also Elina's... any more tips please feel free.

OK, now I see why Lappeenranta. It was just funny to see that mentioned here, because Finland is full of nice small towns that never have foreign tourists (except Russians and of course Japanese).

Did you check the Lappeenranta spa? Spas have often good deals, like this one they have now in Lappeenranta:

"Weekend break 2 days Fri-Sun half board:
Double room 106 € / person Including:
2 x breakfast
2 x lunch or dinner
1 x theatre ticket or movie ticket (extra charge for musicals)"

I have never payed over 100 e of a hotelroom in Finland. But I usually use them during summer, and prices are lower summertime.

Anyway, if you did not eat in a restaurant named Säräpirtti (Lemi, nearby village) last time, do it now. They have only one dish, lamb that has been made the same way over 1000 years. The dish is called särä, and it is really good. Preparing takes hours though, so you have to book the day before.

Hi again Elina
Many many thanks for the food tip... we will certainly look that one up... we are real foodies and love to try different dishes from all over the world.
I have looked up that spa and will put it to our friends..
Another must do is to get more Marimekko fabric from Helsinki... very special and such excellent quality.
If you know of any B&B's in Copenhagen, let me know!
Many thanks for all your help.. Deb
