Landing BCN, leaving for rome - how much time in between?
Hi everyone! I'm in the process of planning my honeymoon and have found these forums invaluable! Now i need some insight into flight planning.
We have a round trip flight booked in and out of barcelona. The current plan is to land in barcelona (around 9:45am) and then immediately catch a flight to rome. (plan is to come back to barcelona a couple days before the return flight and see the city at the end of our trip).
The question is, if we have to get bags, go through customs and then re-check in to go to a different airline (probably ryan air or vueling), how much time would you safely allot between landing and that next flight?

The problem you face is that your flight to Barcelona could be delayed. Have you looked to see what your options are (meaning, what time are flights for Rome leaving Barcelona?
Have you considered doing this the other way around? Land in Barcelona, spend time there, then move on to the rest of your trip and return to Barcelona the night before you need to fly back?

There are two terminals ....are you lending and taking. off from the same terminal?
From the same terminal, at least a 2-2.5 hours (you also have to go through security for the second flight.)
I once made it in less than 50 min. , but with hand luggage and printed boarding pass for the second flight.

yes - there is a 12:05pm ryan air (looks like terminal 2B) and a 2:30pm vueling (looks like terminal 1).
we are arriving delta which also looks like Terminal 1.
I have thought about switching around the itinerary and maybe splitting the time in barcelona - a day up front and a couple days at the end. I might need to reconsider this and see if it makes more sense. I was trying to reduce airport trips by leaving immediately after arriving.

There is a bus between two terminals and a bus to Barcelona from either .
If you decide to stay in Barcelona ,the bus to the center ( Placa de.Catalunya)
is about 6 euros.
Number of hotels are in the walking distance from the bus stop.
Barcelona airport( T1) is very nice.... If you decide to spend a few hours for the Vueling flight.

I agree that this is a very risky connection - since the airlines are not connected presumably these are separate tickets. So if you are late/delayed you would have to rebook a flight to rome - if available - at the walk up rate.
And some of the budget airlines are extremely strict not only about luggage allowance but also about check in times. I would assume you need to allow at least 4 or 5 hours -immigration, collect bags, make way to new terminal, get through security and check in at the required time - plus a cushion for possible delays.
Frankly I would have done open jaws - into Rome and out of Barcelona but presumably it is too late for that.

Some of the budget airlines check in times mean totally checked in, not in line or on your way to the gate.

Me too. I never find that it saves money to buy another flight and lose a day of vacation backtracking. If you haven't actually booked any flights yet, check an open jaw first.

the open jaws i could find were really expensive and not direct so i went with a good deal i found on a nonstop round trip -- that fight is booked.
perhaps it makes more sense to land in BCN, drop bags near an airport hotel, spend the day enjoying the city and then take an early morning to rome? We'd end back in BCN a couple days before the return flight to have more time in the city but this split may be a good buffer in case of delays and doesn't result in spending the whole day in the airport.

If your budget allows, there is a hotel IN the Barcelona airport.

Or you could leave your bags in the luggage storage in the airport (I think it is 10 euros to store a bag overnight) and take the airport bus into the city, with your toothbrush and a change of undies and fly on to Rome the next day after retrieving your luggage. The airport bus is frequent and easy, just choose a hotel close to a stop.
Don't book too early of a flight to Rome though. Let your body recover a bit.

I think that your first idea to go straight to Rome from BCN and spend all your nights in Barcelona at the end of your trip was sound in theory, but it does leave you at risk of delays.
However, some of the "cheap" airlines now offer the option of a more expensive ticket that allows the option of changing a reservation if necessary. for example, Ryanair [which runs a Barcelona to Rome service] will allow free changes of flight on the day of travel:

If you decide to spend your first night in Barcelona, I would not recommend an airport hotel either, because almost all of them require using a shuttle bus to reach, and that can end up being slower than just taking public transportation to the city proper. The airport is not far from the city centre and public transportation there is good.
There are some people who would be comfortable with buying the cheap Ryan air ticket for a same day departure, knowing they might end up needing a new ticket, but hey -- if they make the flight, hooray! And if they don't, well they lost the bet and they pay up with buying a higher priced ticket.
But the equally serious risk you run with that strategy is that something could occur with flight departures in Barcelona which grounds you in Barcelona -- and now you need a hotel room as well as a next day ticket and you'll be paying for a room in Rome you are not using.
