We have been to Amalfi 3X and to Belaggio one time and as socaltraveler remarks, they are really different atmospheres. I thought the scenery was good in the Lake District, but the blue Mediterranean is hard to beat. I thought that the restaurants in Amalfi were perhaps a tad better. I fear that you are going to get few objective responses.
As I reflect upon your question, perhaps I would go back to the Lake District before Amalfi -- and that could be because we have been to Amalfi more times. Sorry to not be more definitive. Will be interesting to see what responses you get.

I agree with socaltravel, gabrino, it is like comparing apples and oranges. Both locations are so lovely. If you can only visit one area do more research and see what pulls on your heart strings. Best wishes with your decision and remember which ever area you do not visit will be there for your next trip to Italy.

I find Lago di Como to be one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in Europe, a unique spot. The other lakes interest me less, and the food and culture of the lakes is fairly uninteresting. I prefer Greece to the Amalfi coast (and eventually the Greeks did too). I live on the Italian Riviera, and generally like it better than the Amalfi, especially for food and olive oil, although Naples is fantastic to me.
The most memorable scenic area in Italy is first and foremost the Dolomiti, perhaps a close tie between the Piano Grande and Lago di Como after -- well, actually Lago di Como is more stunning. I like the val d'Aosta as well. The Riviera and the Amalfi have their counterparts all over the world, and both suffer from too much tourism (as do parts of the Lago di Como and the other lakes).

What time of year are you traveling - that can make a big difference.
We have been to both several times and love both. We usually decide based on the shape of the rest o f the trip.
Are you looking for beaches?
Roman ruins?
Where else are you planning on going?

There were 2 in Rome that were fantastic: Il Barcaro and Hostaria Costanza's. Costanza's is a fantastic place and we have eaten there each time we go to Rome. I recommend to everyone I know that goes.

I know it is like comparing apples to oranges and eventually we would like to visit both places. However, the first week of June this year we will only have the time to visit one, so we were hoping for some insight as to which place might get the highest vote from people who have been to both.
