istedgade. how bad is bad?
i was just reading another thread about hotels in copenhagen and someone mentioned that it was not so great by central station/istedgade...
i will be staying in a hotel in the vesterbro area on frederiksberg allé and was wondering if the area from the train is simply tacky or dangerous? i am a female and will be traveling alone...but i'm from nyc, so is it any worse?

I think you can walk to your hotel from the train station and miss the depressing sex shop area on Istegade entirely. If you did have to go through Istegade, it is just depressing and tacky, not dangerous.

thanks willtravel! you've completely reassured me. istedgade seemed like the quickest route from the station. i'll do it once and will definitely explore around.
depressing and tacky, i should be able to handle...

I'm still researching Copenhagen hotels. Now a lot of the standard recs are in the Vesterbro area. I think that Guldsmeden and Absalon are both in this area?
I still can't decide whether to use Priceline to bid for Marriott.
I've also heard that Vesterbro is becoming livelier and hipper.
For example, see this article from NYT:
http://travel2.nytimes.com/mem/trave...5BC0A9629C8B63
Marriott will be about as equidistant to Stroget as the hotels in Vesterbro are to Stroget. I don't mind paying a bit more to stay in Vesterbro, but is this area a dump or is this worth my time? The worst scenario would be stay somewhere that's not nice and also not convenient.
Thanks.

Now I dont live in Copenhagen, so Im not completely uptodate...but Vesterbro as a whole is NOT a dump no need to worry there...its still a bit mixed though with lots of fancy new shiny stores, but also with some real working class feel to it still. (or maybe hidden just below the surface)
