Is Versailles THAT much more crowded on Sunday than a weekday?
I had planned to go to Versailles on a Wednesday, but I now see that the fountains run on Sundays during the summer (every Sunday? June?). I'd like to see them but not at the expense of being crammed in like sardines for the rest of our day at Versailles. How much worse are the crowds on fountain day?

all I can say is, worse! You can help yourself by buying a Museum Pass or Versailles Pass within Paris,to bypass ticket-buyers' lines at V, though there will still be lines for some of the rooms and tours, and lingering in some of the rooms will not be comfortable or encouraged. This is not to say that seeing the fountains isn't worth the trouble.

we were there on fountain day (It was May '04). It was pretty crowded inside the palace, but we could see everything we wanted to see. We did have passes in order to avoid waiting too long to get in, the line to purchase tickets was extremely long.
I think it was worth it to see the grounds with the fountains on. I'm not sure if they run every Sunday, did you check the official website for Versailles? it's: http://www.chateauversailles.fr/en/index.php
