Is their any value in traveling to Manchester England in June? Alexandria

My husband and I waited too long to book reservations. We can fly to Manchester, England and upgrade with miles. Is there any great sights, restaurants... in Manchester or clsoe by via a short train
ride?
Thank you for your help.

I don't know about Manchester, but it's easy to get cheap flights out to elsewhere (London, Paris, Brussels, and other destinations) on BMI - http://www.flybmi.com . Actually, I have heard Manchester Cathedral is quite impressive, but I'm not sure it would otherwise be a good choice for a European holiday.

I often fly into M'ter when my UK itinerary does not include London. Manchester itself isn't a major tourist destination. But it is close to North Wales, the Lake district, the Peak District/Chatsworth and has relatively painless road access to Scotland, Northumberland/Hadrian's Wall and York.

Your post is not entirely clear - but it sounds like you can't get a flight into London but can get one into Manchester. Go for it -- not for manchester itself but for TONS of things within easy reach.

Janis is spot on about areas worth seeing that are accessible from Manchester - but I don't mean as a day trip (and I guess, neither does she!)
Basically, flying into m/c means you are much closer to the sights of the North. If what you are really interested in is the south (ie London) then there are fast train connex from m/c to London (though coach is almost as quick and much cheaper).

Depending on your age and interests, you could take a side trip to Liverpool to check out Beatles memorabilia.

Re Manchester itselfgter

Re Manchester itself; it's my original home town but I haven't been there in ages. If/when I do go back, I would make my priority visiting the areas that were once the powerhouse of the industrial revolution. The first passenger railway station in the world; the Bridgewater Canal, etc. I believe this whole area has now been turned into a 'heritage' precinct. There is also an excellent Museum of Science and Industry that highlights the contribution of city and people to what we have now - innovations in textile production; engineering and aeronautics, etc., and, of course, motor cars (Rolls & Royce met at the city's Midland Hotel).

Sorry if this is a duplicate post - I guess I just hit the keyboard too hard!

You have had good replies on the countryside within easy reach, and on the heart of Roman and Industrial Revolution Manchester. So I add a third line. Trains leave Manchester Piccadilly at 0751, 0924 and hourly and take 85 minutes to Chester, a wqalled city with a good deal to enjoy from Roman, medieval and Georgian days. Last trains back on weekdays at 2057 and 2245.

Welcome to England.

Assuming your orginal destination was UK, then you can get anywhere you had orginally wanted to go and back to MAN via the trains.
Assuming your orginaly destination was somewhere else, you'll need to hop a short flight from MAN to where ever.
I just flew in from MAN the other day. It is quite a user friendly airport. I would think you can connect to most European gateways from there.
Regarding the train, from MAN it is a very easy walk to the platform from Terminals. I would quess it is about 1.5 hours to London going south and about the same to York going North.
I think there is an argument to be made that going into MAN can sometimes be more convenient than going into London, even if ones orginal destination is London.
