My husband and I are leaving in less than 2 weeks to visit Prague, the Romantic Road, Munich and London. Our car rental & hotel reservations (except Munich & London) can still be cancelled at no cost, if anyone can suggest a change to improve our itinerary. Also, feel free to make suggestions about where to eat (reasonably-priced) near our accommodations.

Day 1: Leave home.
Day 2: Arrive in Prague (Bishop’s House Hotel).
Day 3 – Day 5: Local sightseeing in Prague – would you recommend a day-trip somewhere if we have some extra time? We’ll catch the overnight train from Prague to Frankfurt on the evening of Day 5.
Day 6: Arrive in Frankfurt (early morning). Pick up our rental car & drive to Rothenburg, probably stopping in Wurzburg – Are there any other towns that should not be missed along the way? Would it be advisable to squeeze in Heidelburg on this day? (Eisenhut Hotel).
Day 7: Local sightseeing in Rothenburg.
Day 8: Drive from Rothenburg to Hohenschwangau – We’re think about making brief stops at the following: Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen, Danauworth & Augsburg (Schlosshotel Lisl).
Day 9: Neuschwanstien/Hohenschwangau castles & surrounding areas.
Day 10: Drive from Hohenschwangau to Munich via Oberammergau & Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Renaissance Munich)
Day 11: Local sightseeing in Munich.
Day 12: Not sure what to do here yet, maybe a day-trip to Salzburg since we will still have our rental car until the next day.
Day 13: Return rental car & fly from Munich to London (early morning) – we’re hoping to get all the typical tourist sights done on this day (Millennium Gloucester).
Day 14 – Day 15: We’re thinking about visiting some out-of-town places such as Hampton Court, Windsor, Bath, Stonehenge – any advice (tips) on the most economical way to reach these attractions would be appreciated.
Day 16: Fly home in the evening.

Just a quick note: I see no possible way you can "get all the typical tourist sights done" in London in one day! It takes at least a week, sometimes 2. There is SO much there. I have never been to Prague, Germany, etc., but that part seems pretty good - although maybe another day in Prague so that you could take a day trip to castles, silver mines, Melnik chateaux, etc. But as for London, you really can't do it hardly any justice. At the very least, don't day trip out on the 14th and 15th. Giving yourself about 4 days in London would at least allow you to make some headway.

Another comment ... if you do daytrip out, avoid Stonehenge IMO. Bath and Hampton Court are very nice. I find Stonehenge disappointing.

I think you can easily spend two days sighseeing in Munich without even considering going to Salzburg. But, to be quite honest, I don't get the impression you've done much in-depth research about the various sights in these places.

I should have mentioned that we've been to London before but there are still a few places that we'd like to check out. It wasn't even a part of our orginal plan but this is how it worked out with using our frequent flyer miles.

That's true that we haven't had time to do in-depth research (our flights were just confirmed this past weekend) & that's exactly why I posted this message asking for suggestion for improvements...

Ah - that makes better sense. Sorry for appearing to be snappish.

I do agree with a previous post about Munich. It seemed to me personally that when I was looking into visiting there (trip fell through) I would have wanted 3 and probably 4 days. One-2 might be cutting it too close. Perhaps saving Salzburg for another trip would help you out a little.

JoeTro, I can totally understand why you were a little "snappish" at first. From just browsing this forum for several hours, I noticed that many people plan too little time to see each location. Personally, I don't understand how someone can enjoy "seeing" 10-12 European countries in a couple of weeks.

We will take day-trips outside cities ONLY if we find extra time. Anyway, I appreciate your input. Thanks again.

A good 1/2 day trip from Munich is Auschwitz. It's an easy train connection from Munich. I love visiting Germany, but whenever I am in Bavaria I cannot help but remember that all around me are older Germans who actually helped create one of the worst crimes in history. It's like a 10-ton elephant in the room; I simply have to recognize it when I'm in Bavaria or I can't in good conscience enjoy the area. Take 1/2 a day and go pay tribute to the victims of Nazi Germany.

I presume that Edward 2005 meant Dachau instead of Auschwitz. Dachau is, indeed, an easy 1/2 day outing from Munich.

You might find the film "The Dachau Concentration Camp" which runs 22 minutes interesting. It is shown at 11.30 am and 3.30 pm in English.

The Germany part looks good. How much time do you want to spend in each town? We drove from the Rhine west of Frankfurt to Rothenburg in 1 day, stopping in Wurzburg, Bad Mergentheim for lunch, and arrived by early afternoon in Rothenburg. Bad Mergentheim was a pleasant suprise, a very pretty old town with a castle and no tourists. I doubt you could fit Heidelberg in here, but you could rearrange things and probably make it work. Have you ever been to Germany? If not, I would recommend Heidelberg over Munich, but that is just my preference. I would recommend staying in Fussen on the day you visit Neuschwanstein, it is only a few minutes away and is a good walking city after dark. We opted for Berchtesgarden over Salzburg, but that was a close call. The Obersalzburg area above Berchtesgarden is breathtaking, with several restaurants high in the mountains. Enjoy!
