How many days in Orvieto?

I am working on travel plans for early May. I will be traveling solo to Rome and plan to spend some time in Orvieto as well. I was there for one night on a previous trip and liked it very much. I would like to know what other towns would be easily accessible from Orvieto by bus or train so that I can decide how long to spend there. I do plan on seeing Civita. I will be spending the rest of my time in Rome but I really wanted to get out of the big city for a least a few days. I am open to suggestions for another base outside of Rome as an alternative to Orvieto. Thanks for your help.

You could probably visit Montepulciano (not on Sunday). You would take the train to Chiusi (about 20 minutes) and change to the bus to Montepulciano. Not much bus service on Sundays most places and you need to check return schedules so you don't miss the last transport back (including for Civita).

In addition to Trenitalia trains, you can get to several towns using the Umbria and Lazio public buses:

www.cotralspa.it

Some places which come to mind: Chiusi, Montepulciano, Castiglione sul Lago (Trasimeno), Cortona, Arezzo, Amelia, Narni, Bolsena, Spoleto (by train via Orte).

Hi Cathy - I am also planning a trip (solo) to Orvieto (in March). I also have been there once before. I'm also planning on trying to see Civita. I'm having trouble getting the cotral bus site to work but I found an old schedule that looks like there is a bus leaving Orvieto at 7:50 for Bagnoregio (Civita) and several possible returns.

The other town I'd like to see is Viterbo and it looks like you can get there by train (leaves Orvieto at 8:59, one change, and gets to Viterbo at 10:40), and then at least a couple of decent return possibilities in the afternoon.

Have you been to Siena? I'm doing a repeat visit there for a few days and also doing one night in Arezzo (looks like frequent one hour trains to Orvieto so you could do it as a day trip from Orvieto).

Thanks everybody. Looks like I at least have some options for day trips. I'll investigate further. Haven't been to Arezzo so that sounds good.

Here is the link to the COTRAL schedules from Orvieto to Bagnoregio and return:

http://www.cotralspa.it/orario_comun...io&id=22102004

There is indeed a bus at 7:50 from Orvieto Piazza Cahen (Funicular at top of town) and at 8:00 from Orvieto Scalo (train station below) to Bagnoregio, from Monday through Saturday (no service on Sundays). There is also another bus at 12:45 and 12:55, respectively. I have done Bagnoregio as a daytrip from Orvieto by COTRAL bus.

COTRAL also has buses from Orvieto to Viterbo, either direct or with one connection:

It's a good idea to compare these bus schedules with the train schedules (which also require on connection)

The previous posting was to Bagnoregio. Here is the hyperlink to Viterbo:

Thanks for the info. I get a little confused with train schedules sometimes so this is helpful.
