Hotel in Vienna

Hi - we are heading to Europe this summer and now have one night in Vienna. We are planning on using Marriott points this night due to cash being spent in other cities. Our two options:

Courtyard Prater - here we would need two rooms, but bc of its category and I'm guessing location - 30,000 points total for both rooms.
Marriott Vienna - they do have a room that would accommodate our 2 adults and 2 children for 40,000 points.

We will be arriving in the evening after a very long flight and will spend the next day wandering the city. I like the idea of being near the Danube and near a park, but for only 10,000 points - would central location just make more sense? Ease of meals and sight-seeing?

Your advice is appreciated!

How old are your children? For adults, a central location makes more sense, especially ones interested in historic Vienna, given your very limited time in the city. However, if your children are between 6 and 12, being in the park might make sense if the only thing you want to do in Vienna is enjoy the amusement park.

The Danube would not be much of a consideration for me.

That is helpful. They are 9 and 11. It is our first night and day so while I would enjoy seeing historic Vienna, I am not sure how my children will do with the long flight and time difference. They have flown 6 hours in the opposite direction, with only a 3 hour time difference, so I don't want to plan on anything specific in Vienna. I wasn't sure if being more central would be better for meals and low key wandering around and seeing the buildings, even if we don't tour them all. Of course I am sure my girls would love the Ferris Wheel.

Much of the food that you will get near the Prater is geared towards "fun" -- so you will find lots of sausage and fried foods but -- unfortunately! - not the vast array of exquisite historic cakes you will find in the dead center or Vienna. Still, in summertime, you will find plenty of treats and basic inexpensive fare that is typical of Vienna all around the Prater.

Some 9 & 11 year old children I know would definitely have a blast in the Prater, and would give 2 hoots about Vienna otherwise. You can split the difference, however, if you want the kids to see something of the old city. From the Marriott on the ring, it's less than a 20 minute ride on the ring tram to the Prater.

you sold me on exquisite historic cakes. I will stay at the central Marriott and venture to the Prater if we have the time. Thanks for your help!

I've been to Vienna several times, I think you've chosen the better option.

I live in Vienna, and agree that the Marriott Vienna is the better option; plus, Stadtpark is across the street if it's green space you are interested in. Depending on your arrival time and how everyone is feeling, a horse carriage tour of Vienna at dusk/night might be a pleasant and relaxing way to see the city.

Thank you for the responses. If Vienna a relatively safe city? If my kids need to sleep and I want to wander around alone in the evening?

Vienna is more than relatively safe, especially within the InnerStadt where you will likely wander, though commonsense principles apply as they would in any tourist destination. I can not speak to whether you "should" leave your children in the hotel, though. You know your children and their personal comfort/responsibility levels.

Keep in mind that museums close by 1800, and most stores as well, though a few remain open until 2000. (Stores (and many restaurants) are also closed on Sundays and holidays if your stay overlaps with one of those days.) Evening wandering would be limited to admiring the architecture, or perhaps catching some of the, "Opera for All" on the big screen outside of the opera house in the summer.

I am really not pushing for the Prater area, but if you are thinking that your arrival is so late in the day that you are counting on the evening for some sightseeing, then the Prater area is totally alive at night in summer as far as I know.

On the other hand, if your kids will be so conked they will miss the night and only have the daytime, staying in the centre makes sense if you want to see the center of Vienna in daylight.

I have stayed at the Marriott in the center opposite Stadtpark. It is very safe and I wouldn't hesitate to walk on the streets alone, but of course would not enter the park at night alone without very specific directions about a cafe or some place (they do have them in the park). The Marriott itself is huge, and I would not feel comfortable leaving children alone in it, of just about any age. But that says zilch about Vienna -- I wouldn't do it anywhere in a large hotel with access that is pretty much completely open to the public.
