Herculaneum: Getting there and back

I read that Herculaneum is a one mile downhill walk from the Circumvesuviana station so going is fine. Walking uphill is no longer something we can do for that distance. Will we have trouble finding transportation back? Anyone know the cost if there is such a ride available?

It's 6 minutes, I timed it for a trip report I posted. Also I'm not a fast walker, it's probably 5min for most people.
It is on an incline but it's not a San Francisco type hill more like a rolling hill in the countryside. Regards, Walter

Meant too add: There is also a long inclined ramp into the site.
I'd say you're looking at a total of ~900m uphill walk on the return trip. Regards, Walter

Thanks Walter....perhaps we can try it if the incline is gentle. I appreciate your information!

Hawk: You can see Herculaneum's entrance from the Circumvesuviana Station. If coming from Sorrento it can be seen from that platform at the far end, from Naples you can catch a quick qlimpse of it looking out the rightside of the train.
The street ends right at an arched entrance so consider that distance then double it to include the long entrance ramp.
If you think it is too much consider going to Oplontis-Villa of Poppea it's only a few Circumvesuviana stops away. It's ~200m from the station on a *very* slight incline.
I've posted detailed directions here, either do a search on Oplontis or click-on my name and scroll down to it. It is also on Ira's 'Helpful Information' thread. Or e-mail me, just put ROME in the 'Subject Line'.
Regards, Walter

Thank you Walter! I've printed out your instructions and we are now even more excited about our visit. We took the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento last year with a 4 hour stop in Pompeii but owing to a great conversation with a German couple, we never noticed how close the site was to the station when the train went through the Ercolano station. We may even try for Oplontis too this year if there's time. We REALLY appreciate your information!
