Help picking towns to visit in Provence mid-August?

Does anyone have any advice on towns to visit in Provence on a 5-day trip in mid-August? We will have a rental car and want to see lavender fields if they are still in bloom, but other than that we're flexible. If it makes any difference, we are flying in and out of Nice. Thanks for any help!

Well August is pretty much renown to be a busy month for your trip. I'd leave the car parked in Nice if you have to and train or bus to the out lying areas. I wouldn't want a 3 hour trip just to get to, say...Monaco. Wonder if the hill towns will have tourists? LOL...That (to me) would NOT be fun with all the auto's.

Given your reference to lavender fields, I'm wondering if you mean inland Provence rather than the Côte d'Azur?

No lavender when we were there in September a few years ago, but we enjoyed Avignon, L'Isle sur la Sorgue on market day, Gordes, Roussillon, Les Baux, Arles, St. Remy, and seeing the Pont du Gard.

And if you make it to Avignon, there is a wonderful little restaurant called La Fourchette.
