Has anybody ever been to Treviso?

I watched this program about Treviso on RAI International and the city seemed absolutely beautiful. It was a mix of Venice and Amsterdam.

Has anybody ever visited this city? How was your experience?

Thanks for sharing!

We stayed overnite awhile ago on our way to Venice. I recall a very pleasant experience but nothing extraordinary (Except that my husband left his carry on at the hotel and we had to return to retreive it.)

I've spent a few days there. It's quite lovely and has some nice art in some of the churches. Though it does have some canals running through it, they're not nearly as extensive as the ones in Amsterdam and Venice, nor is it surrounded by water like Venice. On the other hand, it's not crawling with tourists. In my opinion, it's a nice place to visit, but it's not a blockbuster.

Thanks Grandma and Kt for sharing your experience!

I haven't found much information about Treviso on this forum, and my bookguide doesn't say much about it either.

According to the RAI International website, the documentary will be on again next Saturday July 29th at 3:30 am (italian time). It's called "Racconto per due: Treviso".

Has anybody else been to Treviso?

I have a friend who has stopped making Venice his destination for the region because the swarms of tourists and the abundance of overpriced mediocre restaurants in Venezia depresses him. He stays in Treviso and daytrips into Venezia to see a particular museum or church or neighborhood. He loves it. I'm probably going to try his recipe the next time I want to visit the region.

I stay in Conegliano which is right up the road from Treviso. About a 40 minute or so train trip into Venice. I am not saying I will never stay in Venice again but I find that like your friend nessundorma I now enjoy doing this. The region of Veneto is beautiful and so relaxing and there are many wonderful restaurants. Having many friends in the region is of course another plus. I have stayed in Venice enough times that it is not that important for me to do so anymore, especially as yes Venice has gotten so crowded. I love Venice but it is nice to be in a more serene place.

SHADRACH, it is funny, I have not really visited Treviso even though it is so close to where I stay. Treviso is next on my list. If you Google Treviso you will find some interesting website. I would stay there except I like staying in Congeliano where a lot of friends live. I wish I could get the RAI station..you are fortunate.
So anyway, if it appeals to you I would stay there for sure. And btw, Treviso has a train station. The train I take from Conegliano always stops there. Let us know how you enjoy it.

Thanks NessunDorma and LoveItaly for your comments!

I'd like opinions about Treviso because, as I said before, the city looked very charming on the documentary. However, I am surprised that there's not much information about it anywhere. There's plenty of information about Venice, Padova and Verona in Veneto, but not about Treviso.

Anybody else?

Well.... I live in Manhattan.... looking across the river to Queens. It's a lovely view and there are lots of very interesting things to see and do in Queens. However, if you do research on travel to New York you'll get mostly info. on Manhattan. Why? Because all the real blockbusters are here. Just as they are in...Venice, Padova and Verona. If you have time you might want to compare experiences ..... major art centers vs a "normal" town. Anyway... In Italy,I don't think you can lose either way -

You can read about our day trip to Treviso last year here:

We liked the city, although unfortunately we weren't able to spend enough time there to get a good sense of what it had to offer.

Have you looked around on the web? There's a goodly amount of information on Treviso:

http://www.trevisoinfo.com/history.htm

http://www.travelplan.it/treviso_gui...ry_culture.htm

http://www.sevenonline.it/turismo/in...a/raccolta.htm

And this from another travel website:

Treviso is a bustling, prosperous small city and center in the northern Veneto. It seems to have changed little from its early days as a medieval market town and staunch ally to Venice. Much of the city had to be rebuilt after severe World War II damage, but it was done well. Treviso's medieval palazzi and houses with painted facades, churches frescoed by Giotto's follower Tomaso da Modena (1325-79), and pleasant streets cut across by pretty canals together make for a lovely, genuine-Italy break from the tourist beat of Padua-Vicenza-Verona.
