Gifts from Spain for 20 somethings?
Have two neices and want to buy a nice (but inexpensive) gift for them while in Spain..around $30 U.S.
Any suggestions?
Also any gift suggestions for pre-teens.
We'll be in Barcelona, Seville and Andalucia.
Thanks.

Buy them a truly Spanish gift: a pair of castanets. They are clam shaped wood pieces tied together on one side and are used by flamenco dancers to make the rapid clicking sounds by tapping their fingers across the castanets.

When we were in Spain last year, we brought our 20 yr. old daughter back a wood inlaid portable chess set and some terrific earrings and faux fur trimmed sweater. We also got her a short black leather jacket, but that was way over $30, but you might be able to find some leather vests for around $30.

20-somethings might appreciate something for their home/apartment like a piece of beautiful spanish pottery, something they can keep and display for a long time. You can easily find a small piece for under $30. the inlaid chess sets are also nice (backgammon too) if they like that kind of thing, and they are everywhere. For the pre-teens, maybe a flamenco dress or shawl, or the castanet idea is a good one. For that matter, the 20-somethings might like a pretty fringed shawl like the dancers wear - they are easy to find and not too expensive unless you go for a very fancy hand-embroidered one.

Nobody has mentioned fans (abanicos). Be sure they are made in Spain. A lot of them are plastic; they are very colorful but they come from China.
Prices vary, but last year, in Huelva we found some nice ones for about $15 (USD). Huelva is a place to shop for bargains; so these would probably have cost half again as much in Sevilla. I also bought a couple of the cheap ones for my granddaughters.
There is an art to opening and closing a fan and it won't work with the cheap ones. Ask the lady at the shop to give you a lesson so that you can pass it on to your nieces.
